A carrier battle group (CVBG or CARBATGRU) or carrier strike group (CVSG) is a fleet of ships in support of an aircraft carrier. Such groups are primarily used by the United States Navy, which has 12 carrier battle groups scattered across the world. Their existence is an important part of the power projection capability of the United States in that they provide the ability to strike quickly almost anywhere in the world.

The large number of CVBGs used by the United States reflects, in part, a division of labour allotted during the Cold War, in which the United States assumed primary responsibility for blue water operations and for safeguarding supply lines between the United States and Europe, while the NATO allies assumed responsibility for brown and green water operations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_battle_group

“In the CNO Guidance for 2003, Admiral Vernon Clark stipulated that the terms "Carrier Battle Groups" and "Amphibious Readiness Groups" would no longer be the standards terms and that they would be replaced by Carrier Strike Groups and Expeditionary Strike Groups, respectively, by March 2003. The goal being to find ways to effectively produce naval capability in a more efficient manner.

Under this initiative, Cruiser-Destroyer and Carrier Groups are designated as Carrier Strike Groups (CSG) and aligned directly under the numbered fleet commanders. This realignment gives key operational leaders authority and direct access to the people needed to more effectively accomplish the Navy’s mission. Formerly, Carrier Group (CARGRU) and Cruiser-Destroyer Group (CRUDESGRU) staffs were under the administrative authority of the air and surface type commanders (TYCOM). With this new initiative, authority and control will come from the numbered fleet commanders who are responsible for the training and certification of the entire Strike Group. The organizational structure to support the Carrier Strike Groups focuses more on placing Strike Group commanders under the authority of the certifying officer, or the numbered fleet commander.

Under this concept, the warfare distinction of either the air-side or the surface-side is removed and is unified as Carrier Strike Groups.

The carrier strike group (CVSG) provides the full range of capabilities that were present in carrier battle groups. It remains the joint task force commander's premier power projection option. However, because surface combatants will be needed for Expeditionary Strike Groups and Surface Action Groups, the number of ships escorting the carrier would be reduced.

In the new concept, the CVSG would deploy with three or four surface combatants, all Aegis ships. With the introduction of an improved E-2C Hawkeye aircraft and CEC, these ships would provide the group with sufficient defense against the most likely air, surface and subsurface threats.

In larger scale conflict or higher threat scenarios, combining multiple CVSGs with SAGs and ESGs would provide the level of combat capability, power projection and force protection required. This consolidated group is known as the expeditionary strike force (ESF).

It is important to note that there really is no real definition of a strike group. Strike groups are formed and disestablished on an as needed basis, and one may be different from another. However, they all are comprised of similar types of ships. Typically a carrier strike group might have:

•a carrier – The carrier provides a wide range of options to the U.S. government from simply showing the flag to attacks on airborne, afloat and ashore targets. Because carriers operate in international waters, its aircraft do not need to secure landing rights on foreign soil. These ships also engage in sustained operations in support of other forces.

•two guided missile cruisers – multi-mission surface combatants. Equipped with Tomahawks for long-range strike capability.

•a guided missile destroyer – multi-mission suface combatant, used primarily for anti-air warfare (AAW)

•a destroyer – primarily for anti-submarine warfare (ASW)

•a frigate – primarily for anti-submarine warfare (ASW)

•two attack submarines – in a direct support role seeking out and destroying hostile surface ships and submarines

•a combined ammunition, oiler, and supply ship – provides logistic support enabling the Navy's forward presence: on station, ready to respond

The Carrier Strike Group (CVSG) could be employed in a variety of roles, all of which would involve the gaining and maintenance of sea control:

•Protection of economic and/or military shipping.

•Protection of a Marine amphibious force while enroute to, and upon arrival in, an amphibious objective area.

•Establishing a naval presence in support of national interests.
Aside from the renumbering of the Strike Groups, the actual change will directly affect only the administrative chain of command for the 14 CSG staffs. The ships and hardware remain administratively under their current platform TYCOM.

Strike Group commanders remain accountable to the numbered fleet commanders for integrated and sustainment training, and to the TYCOM for materiel readiness and unit (basic) level training of Strike Group units. The CSGs have been renumbered with respect to Navy tradition, with even numbers on the east coast and odd numbers on the west. To preserve their current recognized role as training groups, CSG 1 and 4 have retained their numbers.

Carrier Groups (CCG) and Cruiser-Destroyer Groups (CCDG) will be renamed commander, Carrier Strike Groups (CCSG).

CCG numbers will carry over to the newly formed CSGs, including CCG2, CCG4, CCG6, CCG8, CCG1, CCG3, CCG5, and CCG7. CCDG will be renamed as follows: CCDG2 to CCSG10; CCDG8 to CCSG12; CCDG12 to CCSG14; CCDG1 to CCSG15; CCDG3 to CCSG9; and CCDG5 to CCSG11” (Ref. 283).

Carrier battle group
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_battle_group

The traditional term of carrier battle group (CVBG or CARBATGRU) has been replaced by carrier strike group (CSG) in the U.S. Navy. A CSG is a group of ships centered around an aircraft carrier and commanded by an admiral. The United States Navy maintains 12 carrier strike groups, 11 of which are based in the United States and one that is forward deployed in Japan (Kitty Hawk CSG). The fleet response plan requires that six of these groups be deployed or ready for deployment within 30 days at any given time, while two additional groups must be ready for deployment within 90 days.[1] Their existence is an important part of the power projection capability of the United States in that they provide the ability to strike quickly almost anywhere in the world. The U.S. Navy provides a regular CSG deployment rotation of deployments typically lasting six months based on the needs of combatant commands (COCOMs) that request presence of a carrier in their respective area of responsibility (AOR).

The large number of CSGs used by the United States reflects, in part, a division of roles and missions allotted during the Cold War, in which the United States assumed primary responsibility for blue water operations and for safeguarding supply lines between the United States and Europe, while the NATO allies assumed responsibility for brown and green water operations.

Carrier Groups are lead by an aircraft carrier and include an airwing and a small contingent of cruisers to act as carrier escorts. When the escort ship contingent is designed to accommodate destroyers as-well-as cruisers, the group is referred to as a Cruiser-Destroyer Group. COMCARGRU FIVE is permanently embarked abarod USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) in Yokosuka, Japan, as part of the only permanently forward deployed carrier battle group in the United States Navy. COMCARGRU FIVE is also know as Battle Force Seventh Fleet (CTF-70), Surface Combatant Force Seventh Fleet (CTF-75), and Carrier Strike Force Seventh Fleet (CTF-77). The Group's mission is to provide centralized planning, control, coordination and integration of assigned assets in support of air, surface, subsurface, strike warfare, space and electronic warfare, amphibious warfare, and mine warfare operations or exercises simultaneously. It exercises Tactical Command of Cruiser-Destroyer, Carrier Air Strike, and Surface Action Groups, and functions as Combined Warfare Commander for the Battle Group and Task Force, and as Naval Component Commander for Combined, Joint, or Allied Forces. The Group operates as a component of, or as the Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC) directing tactical air control within a Joint, Unified, or Allied environment.

The Forward Deployed Naval Forces of
Carrier Strike Group Five
http://www.ccsg5.navy.mil/history.html

Task Force 70 is the Carrier Strike Group component of Battle Force Seventh Fleet commanded by Rear Admiral Richard B. Wren. It is centered on the USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63) and the embarked Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW-5). Admiral Wren also commands Surface Combatant Force Seventh Fleet (or Task Force 75) comprised of Aegis Cruisers USS SHILOH (CG 67) and USS COWPENS (CG 63) and the seven assigned ships of Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN (CDS-15).

KITTY HAWK and the nine surface combatant ships operate out of Yokosuka, Japan, while Carrier Air Wing FIVE operates out of Atsugi, Japan, when not embarked on the KITTY HAWK.

Together, they form the critical combat elements of the U.S. Seventh Fleet as the U.S. Navy’s only permanently forward deployed and largest carrier strike group, designated Carrier Strike Group Five (CSG 5). CSG5 forces have a higher operational tempo and are an average of 17 steaming days closer to locations in Asia than naval forces based in the continental United States.

As Commander of Battle Force Seventh Fleet, Rear Admiral Wren has operational control of all carrier strike groups and surface combatants that deploy or transit through the Seventh Fleet area of responsibility.
CTF 70 is preparing to transfer to the USS George Washington(CVN73) and carry on our duties as the nations Forward Deployed Command Task Force. http://www.ccsg5.navy.mil/history.html

DESRON 26 Changes Command

Story Number: NNS080205-16
Release Date: 2/5/2008 3:46:00 PM
From USS Harry S. Truman Public Affairs

JEBEL ALI, United Arab Emirates (NNS) -- Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 held a change of command ceremony while in port Jebel Ali, Jan. 29.

Capt. Michael A. Strano relieved Capt. Richard L. Williams as commander, DESRON 26 in a change of command ceremony.

During Williams' time as DESRON 26, he had success after success and a list of "firsts." As sea combat commander for the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, DESRON 26 planned, coordinated, and executed a major Sink-Exercise of the Ex-USS LaSalle, employing long-range tactics to counter emerging, fifth-generation threats in support of major combat operations.

As commander, Task Group 152.0, Williams breathed new life into Maritime Security Operations through innovative strategic development of a Coalition Task Force campaign, optimizing Expeditionary Strike Force capabilities and an afloat forward staging base with the addition of Central/South Arabian Gulf Navies.

In Norfolk, DESRON 26 earned its reputation as the "go-to" squadron for readiness in support of the Fleet Response Plan. In the course of one year, DESRON 26 ships completed five Board of Inspection and Survey Material Inspections, scoring well above the fleet average.

Williams will report in February to 5th Fleet Headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, as deputy commander for 5th Fleet.

Strano comes to the squadron from Washington, where he was the senior military assistant to the under secretary of defense (comptroller and chief financial officer). Prior to this, he was the executive assistant and naval aide to the assistant secretary of the navy (financial management and comptroller).

At sea, Strano has commanded USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49) and USS Oriole (MHC 55). He now assumes command of DESRON 26 and commander, Task Group 152.0 in charge of Maritime Security Operations in the Persian Gulf.

The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group is on deployment in the 5th Fleet area of operations, which will include five months in the Persian Gulf supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Maritime Security Operations in support of the war on terrorism.
