The guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) commemorated the lives of eight former Sailors and two Navy family members during a burial at sea May 28.

The ceremony occurred on the ship's fantail where an 18-person honor guard carried out the solemn duty of committing former shipmates to the sea. This is a time-honored naval tradition for military veterans who desired to be buried at sea. With the ship stopped in the water, and a seven-man rifle squad fired a 21-gun salute to honor the sacrifices of each Sailor and family member.

The burial at sea was one of the very first events for Chancellorsville on its 2009 deployment with the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group.

"It's important to remember the past as we continue to go forward," said Lt. j.g. Jonathan Flacke, who helped organize the ceremony. "Something like this really makes us stop for a moment and remember why we are out here."

According to naval tradition, the ship's commanding officer, Capt. John Nolan mailed a personal letter to each of the families of those committed to the sea, including a folded flag, a spent cartridge from each of the three rifle volleys and a chart showing the exact location of the ship at the time of committal.

"As we prepare to head west on our deployment, it is an honor and privilege for our crew to take the time to remember fallen shipmates from the 'greatest generation,'" said Capt. Nolan. "This solemn ceremony is a special part of our naval heritage."

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) underway in the Eastern Pacific from 28 May to 5 June 2009.

The USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group paid homage to veterans of the Battle of Midway and WWII in a special burial at sea ceremony in the Central Pacific June 6.

The crew of the guided missile frigate USS Thach (FFG 43), a ship named after Battle of Midway hero Adm. Jimmy Thach, performed a burial at sea for retired Cmdr. Dale "Abe" Simmons, one of Thachs' former wingmen.

"Reading about the heroic exploits of Abe Simmons gave me chills," said Cmdr. Dave Haas, Thach's commanding officer.

"Today, we honor a hero, and bury him at sea as he wished. But we also are saluting all of the veterans of Midway, one of the most strategic battles in Navy history. Heroes like our namesake, Admiral Jimmy Thach, changed the course of world history with their heroism, and it is an honor for our ship to bear his name and carry his legacy."

During the ceremony, Thach was the centerpiece of a formation of the ships of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7, which included the guided-missile destroyers USS Decatur (DDG 73), USS Howard (DDG 83) and USS Gridley (DDG 101). As the ships steamed into the sunset, Thach Sailors committed Simmons' ashes to the sea while F/A-18 strike fighters from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14 flew overhead in the missing man formation.

"As an aviator, it is humbling," said Cmdr. Richard Brophy, commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 115, and leader of the aerial formation. "To honor a legend like Commander Simmons in the same waters that witnessed one of our greatest victories is inspiring."

Aboard Thach, the crew solemnly reflected on their special connection to the heroes of yesterday.

"Midway was a victory of not only courage and determination but also of ordinary Sailors, like all of us, doing extraordinary things," said Haas.

The burial at sea aboard Thach culminated three days of Midway remembrance in the strike group. Aboard the flagship, the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), Sailors watched related movies on the 67th anniversary of the Battle of Midway June 4 and held a special sunset wreath laying June 5.

"The commitment and mettle of the American Sailor are unchanged," said Capt. Kenneth Norton, Ronald Reagan's commanding officer. "Our core values of honor, courage and commitment are the same as they were 67 years ago."

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) underway in the Western Pacific from 8 to 9 June 2009.

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) crossed the International Date Line, entered the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility underway in the Western Pacific on 9 June 2009.

The strike group is made up of the flagship, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76); embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14; the guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62); and the ships of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7--the guided missile destroyers USS Decatur (DDG 73), USS Gridley (DDG 101) and USS Howard (DDG 83) and the guided missile frigate USS Thach (FFG 43). The strike group entered the theatre after successful training in the 3rd Fleet (Eastern Pacific) area of responsibility.

"We are ready for any mission, any tasking," said Capt. Kenneth Norton, Ronald Reagan's commanding officer. "Our Sailors are prepared to carry out any mission in this region."

During their last visit to the 7th Fleet AOR, in 2008, the ships and aircraft of the Ronald Reagan Strike Group conducted an eight-day humanitarian assistance mission for the victims of Typhoon Fengshen in the Republic of the Philippines.

USS Ronald Reagan was commissioned in July 2003, making it the ninth and newest Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The ship is named after the 40th U.S. president, and carries the motto of "Peace through Strength," a recurrent theme during Reagan's presidency.

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) underway in the Western Pacific from 9 to 16 June 2009.

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) commemorated the one-year anniversary of Typhoon Fengshen relief efforts, while transiting the Sulu Sea near the Republic of the Philippines June 21.

The ship took advantage of her proximity to Panay, the same island where the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group responded almost exactly one year ago, assisting the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in providing humanitarian assistance to victims of the typhoon.

For the anniversary commemoration, Ronald Reagan hosted a delegation of distinguished guests from the Philippines, including senior-ranking AFP officials, remembering the relief efforts with a special ceremony.

"There is no greater reward, no greater feeling than knowing you have helped a people, a dear friend and an important ally when they needed it most," said Rear Adm. Scott Hebner, commander of the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group. "It is, after all, what friends do."

Under Secretary Ernesto Carolina of the Republic of the Philippines' Department of Defense and Vice Adm. Ferdinand Golez, flag officer in command, Philippine Navy, joined Capt. Kenneth Norton, Ronald Reagan's commanding officer, in a wreath-laying ceremony. Carolina and Golez set the wreath into the ocean to honor the teamwork of those who participated in the relief efforts and to remember the victims of the typhoon.

"The wreath symbolizes the spirit of brotherhood, the best in people and the enduring friendship between our two nations," said Carolina. "The heroes, the Sailors of USS Ronald Reagan, they are the ones who delivered the goods to help our people and make them smile. The Filipino people are very grateful."

During its role in the relief mission, June 25-July 3, 2008, the Ronald Reagan Strike Group helped deliver 519,000 pounds of rice, fresh water and medical supplies to victims of Typhoon Fengshen. More than a dozen helicopters staging from six strike group ships flew relief supplies from the airport in Iloilo to remote areas in Panay unreachable due to flooded roads.

"I'm coming up on twenty-eight years of a commissioned service, and of all the missions I've done, the Panay humanitarian mission was the one I'm most proud of," said Norton. "Our Sailors helped people who were on the brink of despair. It's great to see and hear today that the island of Panay is in much better shape, thanks in part to our Sailors."

In conjunction with the commemoration ceremony, Reagan dispatched a team of Sailors to Panay to restore Pavia National High School, which was damaged by the typhoon a year ago. Along with some local ROTC cadets, Sailors painted classrooms and laid concrete for a new building.

Storekeeper 3rd Class (AW) Grace Geroche, a Reagan Sailor and native of Panay, attended Pavia National High School from 1998 to 2002 and participated in the restoration project. It was a much happier homecoming for Geroche, who a year ago had to help her family sweep mud out of her flooded home.

"It feels good to restore the high school I once attended," said Geroche. "I wouldn't be where I am right now, if not for where I came from and where I grew up. It's always nice to give back to those people, especially my teachers, who are still there teaching and make an effort for you to learn.

Ronald Reagan and embarked Carrier Air Wing 14 are currently on deployment to the U.S. 7th and 5th Fleet areas of responsibility. Reagan is joined by the other ships of her strike group, including the guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG-62), and the ships of Destroyer Squadron 7, which include the guided-missile destroyers USS Decatur (DDG-73), USS Howard (DDG-83) and USS Gridley (DDG 101), and the guided-missile frigate USS Thach (FFG-43).

USS MILIUS is the 19th ship in the ARLEIGH BURKE - class of Guided Missile Destroyers. The ship is named for the late Captain Paul Milius, an OP-2E reconnaissance pilot who was shot down during the Vietnam War.

USS MILIUS is taking part in an Optimal Manning Project that reduces the numer of billets authorized from 289 to 231. Aboard MILIUS, the installation of a new self-service mess line has allowed the ship to reduce the number of food service attendants (FSA) on the ship. Greater use of video cameras for remote monitoring will reduce the need aboard MILIUS for 24-hour manning of certain watches and distance support software will give Sailors an increased capability to access technicians ashore.

Aboard MILIUS, some procedural changes have also helped the ship to reduce billets. The boatswain's mate of the watch, quartermaster of the watch and signalman of the watch have been consolidated into a new position called the bridge specialist. Electronics technicians and information systems technicians are learning each other's jobs and the ship is adopting a more flexible, rapid-response approach to damage control, using one robust repair locker instead of three to fight a main-space fire.
