ENTERPRISE STAFF REPORT
HIGH POINT - A U.S. Army veteran was killed Friday morning when a vehicle struck the motorcycle he was riding.
According to the Highway Patrol, David Edward Perkins, 28, died as a result of a head-on collision with a commercial truck driven by Justin Dean Wood, 43, of Lexington. Perkins was traveling north on Sandy Ridge Road on a Honda motorcycle at approximately 10:50 a.m. when he was struck by Wood as the truck driver attempted to make a left turn onto Gallimore Dairy Road.
Wood was charged with involuntary manslaughter but was released from the High Point Jail on a written promise to appear in court.
A 1998 graduate of Ledford Senior High School, Perkins attended Forsyth Technical Community College and Western Carolina University. Serving in Afghanistan during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the High Point resident received the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Parachutist Badge.
Left behind to cherish is memory are his Mother, Donna Rae Wilson of High Point and his Father, Odie Perkins of Lexington, brother, Kenny Perkins and wife Jennifer, brother, Kenneth Jay Beverly, Jr. of High Point, and his girlfriend, Heather Key of Greensboro.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church 167 Shady Grove Church Rd. Winston Salem, N.C. with the Rev. Lynn Upchurch officiating. Full Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army. Memorials may be directed to The National Military Family Assoc. (Attn. Military Children Initiatives) 2500 N. Van Dorn St. Suite 107 Alexandria, VA. 22302-1610, online at www.nmfa.org. Online condolences may be made to the Wilson/Perkins families at www.jcgreenandsons.com.
RIP David Perkins and thank you for you service to help keep us here at home safe and free. Prayers for the family and loved ones. May God touch you all with peace and comfort during this time of sorrow. _________________
