This is not about 9/11, necessarily. It is about us seeing other people through our tragedy. Not just Iraq's but anyone who lives through something that tears peace.
Why can't we see
what our brother feels
when they come in crying
because of a bomb
ripping up their streets.
We have seen that bomb
as it flew out of the sky
we know what it is like
when our home is destroyed
and peace is pulled from us
So why can't we see
what it is like for them
who's home is killed
like so many others
Remember, Remember, Remember
the pain, the anger
the hopelesness, the fear
you felt the day in September
when you learned
you are not safe
behind your walls of ocean
We can be just like them
we need to feel
with them
We need to see
They are us. |

It's a two way street, that's for sure. Until everyone embraces the fact that we're all human and all deserve to live, regardless of creed, we'll continue to kill one another as we have for centuries.
The problem is what to do until that happens? It's a mess, no doubt. One wishes they could just snap their fingers and make the world better. _________________ "Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost" |

I agree with Morpheus. war is a horrible thing that seems to just travel from place to place and never really ends it just changes face. Well written work. |

When I saw U2's Rattle and Hum movie recently I was struck by how differently a song sounds when you hear the story behind the song or when it is being performed. They performed Sunday Bloody Sunday at a concert that had recently been filmed. Well not long before the concert there had been a bombing in Ireland set off by one of the sides in the civil war. Bono made the point that they were killing themselves. It made me think about how we lamented when 9/11 happened but how often do we cry when we here how many people have been killed by a car bomb in Iraq or Isreal or by militias in any of a number conflicts. For the longest time I didn't think anything of it. They are faceless. But really they are not. They have our faces. They feel the grief of their tragedy as profoundly as we felt when our people were killed. It is like C.S. Lewis wrote in Till We Have Faces, we can't have a face to face conversation until we have faces. He was talking about talking to God but it is just as applicable to this situation. Until I saw that this people had a face like mine I couldn't understand their suffering. Now I can. It is the same pain and greif I felt on 9/11. _________________ The freedom to think is the most precious gift we have. |
