WHY WHY WHY does this always happen!

There is always three option with a call.

The right call
The wrong call
The only thing it can't be!!!!!!!

How many times do these guys pick the only thing it can't be???

If you say the Davis catch/interception, the right call would be interception because you need to get two feet down "on your own". You need to take these two steps making your own football move to get these two feet down. You can't get one down and then the other touches the ground in the middle of your body flipping around in the air. Therefore he did not get two feet down, so now you must maintain possession when you hit the ground because the catch is not yet complete. Davis did not do this and the ball clearly did not hit the ground therefore it is an interception not a fumble an interception. If the ref messed it up and said he did get two feet down so the play was over when his elbow hit, I would think that is the wrong call but a judgment call. But how in the world are these 80 year old men allowed to run around out there without the ability to remember the rules. He just can't make this call. It cannot be incomplete when the ball never hits the ground!!!! COME ON! At least make a bad call not an impossible call.

I agree that they got the call wrong but I see it different than you do.  I believe that he caught the ball and that he was down by contact and therefore the ground can't cause a fumble.  It should have been ruled a catch and a first down for the 49er's.  I was watching the game with my buddy who is a Steeler fan and we both thought the same thing.  The reciever caught the ball and put it away, took the hit from the defender why still maintaining position and then the when he landed on his back and his elbow hit the ground causing the ball to come loose.  The bottom line is that it was either a catch for the 49er's or and interception for the Steelers and the like you said the official somehow found a third option.  That is why i say the NFL should take away instant replay away from the officials on the field and pattern it after the college instant replay.

On the subject of the Niners-Steelers game, I received this email.  I didn't see the game myself, thought I'd post this...

Third quarter of today's game = one blown call followed by one totally blown Instant Replay review, followed shortly thereafter, by one totally obvious "non-call" of intentional grounding -- field hash marks clearly indicate QB still in pocket and camera view shows no uniform (from either team) within at least 10 yards of the pass when it went out of bounds (maximum range of camera view shown -- distance could have been greater).

Solution:

Thousands (tens of thousands?) of individual fans sue NFL in small claims' courts in their individual home town jurisdictions for negligent infliction of emotional distress, when a blown call is made and confirmed - but not overturned - by instant replay.  NFL must either dispatch ordinary employees around the country to defend (lawyers are not allowed in small claims' courts) OR NFL lawyers must go into Federal Court and petition to have all cases from all jurisdictions removed to and consolidated in Federal Court thereby opening themselves up to a de facto admission that this is a class action matter -- which will attract the heavy-hitter plaintiffs' lawyers in the same way that sharks are drawn to blood in the water.
