The NFL makes the a new rule that you can't spike the ball or spin it or else it is a delay of game penalty.  Sounds good in theory but it is being called really inconsistently by the different groups of officials.  I saw two blantant non calls over the weekend.  One was on the Seahawks quaterback when a play was blown dead for a penalty against his team and he spiked the ball in frustration.  The other call i can't remember who it was or what game but the ball was intercepted by a corner back and after he was tackled he spiked the ball in his excitement.  Replays show Terrell Owens flipping the ball in the direction of the back line official and he is called for delay of game!  A really simple fix to this problem would be just make it a rule that the player hands the ball to an official promptly after each play.  The officials are right there to spot the ball anyway!  Come on NFL this isn't rocket science!

This horse collaring penalty is just plain stupid.  It is also being called inconsistently be the officials.  Sometime they call it sometimes they don't!  It was put into effect to protect the player that is being tackled from getting rolled up on from behind by the defender and possible hurting them yet the poor linemen in the trenches get rolled up from behind on almost every running play.  Are linemen expendible and everyone else not?  I would like to know how many horse collaring tackles has there actually been since this rule came into effect, called or not called for penalties and how many injuries as a result of these tackles.  Will the NFL get rid of this rule?  No they will probably keep it and add a 5 yard incidental horse collaring also.  More rules just make things more complicated and controversal.

I like your post.  IMHO, inconsistency is the biggest problem in the NFL, and it stems from judgement calls.  Too often, the rules rely on the officials to use their own discretion in making a call.  It's a recipe for disaster.  I'll bash the hell out of officials when they make mistakes, but I also think a big problem are the rules themselves that make it overly complex and leave too many plays open to interpretation.

The NFL is pretty consistent about fining people who horse-collar: IMHO, they should do away with the penalty and give out suspensions instead.

It's the inconsistency in calling holding that makes me apoplectic.

This is in response to nomoreamateurs post. I agree with you on the holding calls but how can you say that the NFL is consistent in fining people for horse collaring?  Are you saying that Roy Williams is the only player making these penalties in the league and being fined?  Did you not watch the Bears and Cowboys when on two different occasions after Williams was flagged and later fined by the NFL for his horse collaring penalty that the Bears defenders made the same such penalty and not only were they not flagged for it at the time they were also never fined by the NFL! You think that he should be suspended for making a tackle that was legal in the NFL until 2 or 3 years ago?  Let me tell you something I would much rather want Willaims or any other defensive pllayer for that matter to tackle me with a horse collar than take my chances trying to catch a pass across the middle of the field and the safety  ready to knock me senseless.  I guarantee you that more players have been injured getting nailed going across the middle than by horse collaring.  Bottom line horse collaring rule is just plain stupid and needs to go away.  I would rather the NFL  keep the players in their uniforms with pads than an uniform that is looking more and more like  a dress.

The NFL has just suspended Roy Williams for making a tackle and did not even roll up on the back of the legs.  In the same game another Cowboy goes helmet to helmet with an Eagle reciever and takes him out of the game with what they called during the game as a head injury and there was no flag on the play and as of yet no penalty from the NFL.  This is what is wrong with the NFL.  I think Roger Goddell needs put on a uniform and first have Roy Williams get a ten yard running start and come out of no where and "lay the hammer down" on him and if he gets up from that then have Roy Williams tackle him with the horse collar!!  The rule would change tomorrow!!
