It was very clear that the pass from Brady to Gaffney with 55 seconds left was incomplete as he did not have possession with both feet down in bounds. I don't understand how an official could call that a completion especially after seeing the replay up close. Very obvious to me the ball was still moving around in his hands before the last foot made contact. What is wrong with these refs? I am not a Baltimore fan nor a New England fan. I am just sick of the calls getting screwed up this year. I cannot be the only person who thinks that was a totally screwed up call.

| I totally agree with you! This is what is so frustrating about having the officials on the field review the calls instead of having people in a booth upstairs reviewing the plays like they do in college. It's like letting me correct my own paper in school and the answer is wrong but one part is close to being right. I know that i gave myself the benefit of the doubt more than someone else would have! I think they same thing happens to the officials! The replay showed me two things:[1] the reciever was still juggling the ball in his hands as he was going out of bounds and [2] that the official that was closest to the play his view was completely blocked off by the recievers body! My question to the NFL is why does that call have to have undisputable video evidence to overturn an officials call when replay clearly showed that the official could not have possibly seen the juggling of the ball in the first place? The NFL needs to go to the college replay system!! |

| In addition to the call you mentioned, I thought the holding call on 4th down a few plays earlier was BS. It was one of those ticky-tack calls that never should have led to a flag. |

Interesting reading from Gregg Easterbrook who writes for ESPN.com....
"Excessively penalizing Baltimore in the final minute, in a manner that strongly aided New England, was at best a lapse by the officiating crew and at worst strange.
Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle said after the game that head linesman Phil McKinnely repeatedly called him "boy" in the game's closing minutes, a racial insult when spoken by a white person to an African-American. From the sound of things, Rolle was jawing with McKinnely, which even a veteran player such as Rolle should not do. But officials should never jaw with or insult players, either. If McKinnely did use a racial insult against Rolle, during the same game-deciding moments when the officials were favoring New England (so far, McKinnely has not commented on this), that would have been highly unprofessional and would call into question whether the officiating crew was neutral." |

I whole heartily agree that the official that ruled a touchdown clearly was not in a position to determine control of the ball therefore the call definitely needed to be reviewed. He is not the one to blame because from his vantage point it looked good.
I think the head refs need to be educated much more than they are. Also I agree that as in college, the review should be from somebody upstairs that their ego isn't involved. I clearly saw daylight around the ball while the receiver went out of bounds.
I believe all refs need to be schooled on letting players determine the outcome and quit calling these petty calls. Just as in basketball, the offense and defense and jokeying for position that does not necessarily mean they are blatantly holding.
I don't like baltimore but the last series was terrrible with the officiating.
I think one problem is that the officials are so afraid of making mistakes that they come up with obscure reasoning or an obscure rule that makes the play stand. For example, Troy Palamalu's interception against the Colts in the 2005 playoffs, anybody with half a brain could tell that was an interception but the official totally misinterpreted the rules (head official of the NFL stated that) and the head ref backed up the call on the field.
When will the refs just let the players play and call just major and blatant violations? |

I have no great love for NFL officials, but this won't do anything to fix the problem. You need to draw the line somewhere, and competitive players will play as close to it as they can, leading to borderline calls.
As for the OP, the illegal contact call and the touchdown were definitely borderline, but I'm not sure they were wrong, given how subjective both rules are. The NFL needs to clarify both of them. The timeout and the false start looked routine, even if they were immensely frustrating for Ravens fans.
In any case, if the officials were biased towards the Patriots, why didn't they nail one of the Ravens receivers for offensive pass interference at the end of the game? Last time I checked it's illegal to throw a DB out of the way prior to the pass arriving. |

| This is in response to nomoreamatuers last post. I agree with you on most of your points except a few. I have never seen a catch when a receiver was juggling the ball not overturned by replay. The most recent being T.O. against the Packers when at first glance his catch looked good. Replay showed that he was juggling the ball as he was going out bounds and it was over turned. No one said a word about that play because everyone knew that it wasn't a catch. In my opinion this rule has never been subjective until now. The illegal contact on the Ravens on a scale of 1 to 10 was a 3 and drew a flag. The mugging on the last play of the game was a 10 and a no call. I just think that the officiating the whole game stunk. If the officials can call an unsportsman like conduct when a player is arguing with an official over a penalty that is called then the officials should issue unsportsman like conduct when a player lobbies for a penalty that is not called. Tom Brady would have picked up a few of those by himself during the game!! |
