An amazing sequence of events reminded me why I hate the challenge rules with a passion. A Redskins receiver catches a pass, but it's not clear if he was in bounds. The ruling on the field is that he was. Before the Vikings can determine whether they want to risk a timeout on a challenge (down in the fourth quarter), the Redskins rush the snap and turn the ball over. As it turns out, the Vikings botched a substitution and had twelve men on the field, so the Redskins challenge. The officials discover their mistake and call a 5 yard penalty. (I believe this is allowed.) At this point, the fumble play NEVER HAPPENED, but the Vikings can't challenge the results of the previous play.
To recap: arbitrary restrictions on what can be challenged, and arbitrary limits on when challenges can be issued. Get professional referees, and scrap the challenge system or have all reviews requested from the booth. It's the only way to fix this nonsense. |
