Originally, the NFL claimed the Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick were fined and punished for illegally taping the New York Jets in week one of the 2007 season. During the NFL investigation, the NFL seized additional evidence, including tapes, from the Patriots organization. The league destroyed the tapes and evidence, never disclosing what was on the tapes. Now we know...the Patriots have been cheating since 2000!

" WASHINGTON (AP) -- Bill Belichick has been illegally taping opponents' defensive signals since he became the New England Patriots' coach in 2000, according to Sen. Arlen Specter, who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told him that during a meeting Wednesday.
"There was confirmation that there has been taping since 2000, when Coach Belichick took over," Specter said.
Specter said Goodell gave him that information during the 1-hour, 40-minute meeting, which was requested by Specter so the commissioner could explain his reasons for destroying the Spygate tapes and notes. "

Now I realize this has nothing to do with NFL officiating, but it certainly gives a glimpse into the mindset of the NFL...cover up, protect, admit no wrong doing. It's worth remembering that mindset the next time the league stands by it's officials regarding disputed calls such as the "Tuck Rule" or the botched officiating during Super Bowl XL. Can you really trust the NFL to be honest about it's officials when it tries to cover up evidence of long term cheating by one team? |

I agree it was surprising to find out the tapes went that far back.
I will not argue that it changes the way I view the patriots, what does concern me is that we have a senator spending time complaining about him not getting to view 7 years worth of video tapes.
There are things that need to be fixed in football, and Officiating is number one.
I would rather have specter watch 7 years worth of football games and point out all the mistakes. If he has that much free time to watch 7 years of tapes (and criticize the commissioner of football) he should do something constructive.
But apparently his state is in such great shape that he doesn't need to spend time being a senator, so he can be bitter about the Eagles losing the superbowl. |
