Ugh… What a hell of a f*** day. I have a 71 Gambles Lawn tractor that I've been working on for the last month or so. I'm trying to get it ready for the tractor races in Iola,WI. When I got it it was just the frame and body, but I had a 20hp Brig & Straton Boxer Twin motor sitting around so I figured I'd use that on the Gambles.
The problem with that was the mounts on the motor didn't match up with the mount holes on the frame, so I drilled new ones. Then I had to put custom throttle and choke cables on it. Next I had to rewire it. Then I got custom pipes cut for exhaust stacks, and a** them. Then I had a hell of a time getting the fuel line hooked up because the nipple broke off the carb, but I managed(it still leaks a bit). Then I couldn't get the custom pulley for the rear end to got on, after which I bought a drive belt in the wrong size, which I didn't realize until I got it stuck and had to cut it off. Then the starter was shot and I figured I'd rather put a pull cord pulley on it rather than relying on a batter. Yeah… Too f*** bad the one I needed hasn't been available since 1989! So I made one of my own with the drive pulley from yet another tractor, which I just got mounted yesterday.
So today I had it running for the fist time. It fired right up, and the dual exhaust sounded beautiful. The headlights were nice were burning nice and bright. I figured I'd move it around a bit. So I sat on the seat, depressed the clutch and moved the coca-cola shifter knob to 1st gear. Three things happened that I did not expect. 1… the tractor took off with my foot still on the brake/clutch. 2… the front end of the tractor picked up so high off the ground that I fell off the back. 3… The custom rear end pulley that I put on came off and the tractor stopped about six feet away from me.
So there I was sitting on my a** trying to figure out just what the f*** happened. I know now for a fact that I have to order a custom belt for the f*** thing. I don't think I feel like f*** with it for a while though. Maybe I'll just sell it and be done with it. Anyone want to buy a tractor?
