Sir Roger Moore was born on October 14th 1927 in Stockwell, south London, the son of a policeman. His first job at 15 was in an animation studio. His very first screen appearance was as an extra in "Caeser and Cleopatra" in 1945. He then attended The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. This was followed by several appearances on the London stage in various plays. His acting career came to an abrupt halt however, when he joined the army to fulfill his National Service duties. He was stationed in Germany and served with the Combined Services Entertainment Unit, where he rose to the rank of Captain.
When Roger's time in the army came to an end, he found it difficult to obtain theatre and film work. It was then that he became a model, and could regularly be seen posing for knitting patterns. He also got lucrative work posing in magazines, advertising toothpaste and other brand goods, in between acting jobs. It was around this time Roger married for the first time to Doorn van Steyn, who he had met while studying at RADA.
In 1953 he married for the second time to singer Dorothy Squires, decided to try his luck in the States, and signed a contract with MGM. His first movie was "The Last Time I Saw Paris" alongside Elizabeth Taylor. He went on to make "The King's Thief" "Interrupted Melody" and his first starring role as King Henry of France in "Diane." The movie was not a success, and Roger's contract was not renewed.
He returned to England and was offered the role of "Ivanhoe" the tv series. This was to run for 39 episodes. Roger then moved back to the States and signed with Warner Brothers to star in the tv series "The Alaskans." This was folowed by another tv series "Maverick." He was featured in 3 films with Warner Brothers, "The Miracle" "Gold of the Seven Saints" and "The Sins of Rachel Cade."
In 1962 he headed back to London and was offered the part of Simon Templar - "The Saint." The series brought Roger worldwide recognition and would run for 118 episodes. When the series ended, he went on to star in "Crossplot" and "The Man Who Haunted Himself." Roger married for the third time in 1969 to Luisa Mattioli.
In 1972 Roger played Brett Sinclair in the tv series "The Persuaders" opposite Tony Curtis. It came to an end after 24 episodes and it was then that Roger was free to accept the role of James Bond.
He made 7 altogether, more than any other screen Bond - "Live And Let Die" "The Man With The Golden Gun" "The Spy Who Loved Me" "Moonraker" "For Your Eyes Only" "Octopussy" and finally "A View To A Kill." In between his stint as Bond, Roger made some very fine films including "Gold" "Shout at the Devil" "The Wild Geese" "Ffolkes/North Sea Hijack" "The Cannonball Run" and "The Sea Wolves." After Bond, Roger starred in "Bullseye" "Bed and Breakfast" and "The Quest" to name a few.
In 1991 Roger was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for Unicef. His missions take him to many parts of the world, campaigning for deprived children. In 2002, he married for the 4th time to Kristina Tholstrup. In 2003 he was awarded a Knighthood by Queen Elizabeth in recognition of his Unicef work.
Roger has 3 children, Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian from his third marriage, and 3 grand-daughters - 2 from Geoffrey and 1 from Christian. He is also step-father to Christian and Kristina from his present marriage.
Roger and Kristina, when not travelling the world actively supporting Unicef projects, live in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, and in Monte Carlo.
