Persuaders! ..... a movie remake??

Postby Kendall on Thu Aug 17, 2006 11:57 am

I just read that Persuaders series are being remade as a movie. Is that true or just a rumor? Who will be playing Rogers part? I really wish they'd stop with all this remake business! First The Saint, and now this.  :smt012

Roger was asked  about it on a recent  tv chat show, and he said he was delighted with the news. I don't know, why carry on doing re-makes all the time?

The actor who will play Brett Sinclair is Steve Coogan. He's a comedy actor, and if you saw (another re-make) of "Around The World In 80 Days" a few years ago, he played the main role of "Phineas Fogg."

In general, I don't agree with remakes. Roger is the soul of Simon Templar and Brett Sinclair and noone will be able to cast a shadow over it.
As regards James Bond, Roger was the one who had to do the "bad" part: substitue Sean Connery, not an easy task, but he was very clever, he didn´t imitate Sean, he gave birth to a new, different Bond. :smt002

Welcome back to SimplyMoore, ST10!  :smt007  How have you been?

Remakes have become a major trend these days. Nearly all classic series have been made into movies, but most not very successfully. Personally speaking, I can 'live' with movies made after a TV series as long as the classic shows are not forgotten. But I object whole-heartedly to remakes of classic movies that are not all that old to begin with and still known to the audience.

I am not all that attached to The Persuaders. I was much more disgusted when they made The Saint with Val Kilmer, because he was such a far cry from the character in the books. But still - Roger was Brett Sinclair, no one can replace our Rog.  :smt001

I did a google search and found a picture of Steve Coogan. Weeelllllll...... He aint's Roger, but he has that aristocratic look about him.
I don't really look at Roger's Bond movies as remakes of Connery's. Bond stands in a class by itself. It keeps going and going.........like Energizer Bunny  :smt120 Noone even cares anymore who's going to play the part. But Persuaders is all Roger's, as well as The Saint.  :smt117

The thing about Steve Coogan he is a very talented master of disguise, and can act out many different characters. So you never know, he might just be ok to do justice to the original.

We know "nobody does it better." :smt002

The Persuaders 2007 got a new writer! Check this out:

The Persuaders Gets A Writer
David Dorfman's working on the script
Source: Variety

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Persuaders, the TV adventure series with the highest mismatched buddy concept of all (one’s a street smart Brooklyn chancer, the other’s an upright English lord!), is well on its way to the big screen, with a writer just hired to flesh out a script.

David Dorfman, who wrote Anger Management, will pen the screenplay based on the show that saw Tony Curtis and Roger Moore lovin’ the ladies, livin’ the high life and lockin’ up the criminals.

There’s no word on a director yet – or anyone being cast – but frankly we’re in no hurry. We’re still hoping this won’t be another Avengers debacle."

Persuaders! ...A movie remake

Clooney and Grant star in The Persuaders film

This article is from "The Daily Telegraph" newspaper.
By Celia Walden in Cannes

Hugh Grant and George Clooney are to star in a film remake of cult television show The Persuaders.

Following the recent Hollywood trend for turning classic films and small-screen series into blockbusters, the pair will reprise the international playboy roles made famous by Roger Moore and Tony Curtis.

As one of the biggest cult television series of the 1970s, it commanded high viewing figures on both sides of the Atlantic. And with two of the most bankable leading men on board, there will be much pressure on the £35 million film to be a success.

The film is being co-developed by Ben Stiller, the star of Meet the Fockers, and will see Grant play aristocratic Englishman Lord Brett Sinclair with Clooney as his wise-cracking American friend Danny Wilde.

In the original series Sinclair and Wilde found themselves in front of a judge after destroying a restaurant during a fight on the French Riviera. They are given a choice of going to jail or fighting crime. After grudgingly agreeing to join forces, they travel the world fighting gangsters and spies.

The film is set to be a pared down version of the 24 one-hour episodes, with the two idiosyncratic, wealthy rogues investigating a crime the police cannot solve in a series of exotic locations and risking their lives for one another in the process.

"We're very excited about the project finally coming together," Nick Hamson, the co-producer, said. "It's been an idea we've been keen to pursue and we're so pleased that it is now in development. People of our generation grew up watching The Persuaders religiously."

Brass Hat, the British film company, will co-produce the film with Hyde Park Entertainment for release in December 2008.

I'm not too happy with a movie version of "The Persuaders" being  made.  On the other hand I feel that Hugh Grant is nearer to the character of Brett Sinclair than Steve Coogan.

I've just seen a teaser trailer of "The Persuaders" movie on Youtube, and wasn't very impressed.

The concept of two rich playboys fighting crime worked great in the 1970's, but not so sure if it will do well second time around.

I agree with Connie about Grant being a better choice than Coogan. George Clooney is too debonaire to play Danny. If I remember correctly, Danny came from the slums of New York and became a self-made millionaire. Brett was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. They were opposite from each other, and that's what made them so interesting to watch. I can picture Grant as Brett, but not Clooney as Danny, as much as I like Clooney as an actor.
