"The Saint" locations.

I wonder why, during filming of the colour "Saint" shows, they used the same streets  over and over again that were obviously constructed in the studios just for this purpose.  Depending on which country the stories were set, all they did was to change signs in the streets to Italian, German, French etc. but the locations were  instantly recognisable.

Do you think this was done to cut costs, or to enable that scenes were shot without possible interruption from watching crowds?

Hi Amber

I noticed that too, but it didn't bother me because I knew the series was made in the 60's and Sir Roger himself once said that for the Saint series the budget was quite low, hence the fake palm trees, changed signs etc.  For me, it didn't detract anything from my enjoyment of the series and if you want to view fake sets, try watching an ep of that famous sci fi series made in the 60's Lost In Space - they were more guilty of changing signs and using fake sets than anyone, and to me on that set it was far more obvious than on the Saint.

I think you have to remember also that in the 60's and 70's, budgets for tv shows were quite low by todays standards, but having said that, I think The Saint did well with what little budget they had.

I remember Eunice Gayson saying once that in one ep she did of The Saint, she had to bring some of her own outfits on set. Of course, that would be unheard of today. :smt001

Yes Goodnight007.2, I feel too it was all down to budgets for the shows. Producing them in colour from the previous black and white ones must have seen the costs soaring.   Though I did miss seeing the  original shots of Simon Templar's London mews home.

Regarding Eunice Gayson wearing her own clothes, I wonder if Roger wore his own too?

Hi Amber

I'm not sure about that. Surely 'the star' would have had costumes for him, but you never know, when I look and listen to the commentaries that RM has done on some of the Saint dvds, I will let you know if he says anything about this. :smt001

This bothered me only a little, when it got too obvious you know. This was very typical of the 60s though. Just look at so many other tv series. BTW, I have Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeanie, and noticed both series had the same house. The main house in Bewitched was one of the homes in I Dream Of Jeanie, as if they lived in the same neighborhood. I have to believe its because of budget. But it doesn't change the quality of the story. Today, we have the opposite on tv - questionable story quality and good props.  :smt002
