MORE than 30,000 children die every day. Yet, these deaths could be prevented, if only the children were immunised.
Immunisation is one of the most cost-effective preventive public health measures, and The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) is the world’s largest provider of vaccines to developing countries.
Unicef supports child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls and the protection of children from violence, exploitation and AIDS.
In support of Unicef's efforts, Sheraton Subang Hotel & Towers is raising funds during the month of September to benefit thousands of underprivileged children in the Asia Pacific region.
The fundraising activities are the “Leave Your Unused Malaysian Currency” envelope campaign and the Charity Rubber Ducky sale.
Both activities are organised as part of Unicef's 2006 Check Out for Children Challenge initiative.
The “Leave Your Unused Malaysian Currency” campaign encourages hotel guests to donate their unused Malaysian currency before they leave the hotel or country.
“We started this campaign in July and the response so far has been good,” said the hotel’s general manager, Datin Jasmine Abdullah Heng.
Meanwhile, the yellow rubber ducks are being sold at RM6 each to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Unicef this year.
The Unicef Check Out for Children Challenge was first launched in the Asia Pacific region in 1996 by Unicef Goodwill Ambassador Sir Roger Moore, aimed at encouraging guests to make a US$1 donation to Unicef immunisation projects as they checked out of the hotel.
To date, the initiative has raised more than US$3mil in the Asia Pacific region.
“The Unicef Challenge is a Starwood staff fundraising initiative. I’m happy to see that we are rising to this new Challenge,” said of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc., Asia Pacific Miguel Ko.
