How did you get interested in Roger Moore?

Postby Sunny on Wed Aug 16, 2006 12:05 pm

This is the first question that comes to mind when meeting new fans. Please share with us your story. How did you get interested in Roger's career? What made you like him? How long have you been a fan?

I have been a Roger fan for close to 8 years. I am originally from Russia and came to the US quite young. At that time I wasn't into James Bond, even though it was shown there. Bond seemed too complicated for me to fully grasp as a child, and I was too stuck on the idea that only one actor who started playing the character, is allowed to be recognized for it, and therefore had too closed of a mind to watch anyone other than Sean Connery. The only movie I saw with Roger in Russia was "Bullseye!" and it became my favorite movie as a teenager, and I used to look forward to it every time it came on TV.

A few years later, my husband insisted that we watch other Bonds besides Connery, and when I saw "The Spy Who Loved Me", I had to admit that Roger was just as good or better than SC, and decided to look more into his other work. After discovering The Saint, I got hooked, and the rest is history.  :smt003

I first became a big fan of Roger's way back around 1960. As young children my friend and I loved to go to the movies, and this time we went to see something called "The Miracle."  This also starred Carroll Baker. She played a nun living in a convent in the times of the Napoleanic wars in Spain. Roger was the handsome captain of dragoons that she fell in love with.

The moment Roger appeared and said his first words, it was like a light being swiitched on in me. It was those clear blue eyes and his wonderful smile that did it! It was a very dramatic movie and Roger had some great scenes, he was fantastic as the romantic hero.

I decided to find out more about this actor, and was surprised when my friend reminded me he was in "Ivanhoe" which was on tv each week. I never even noticed him, but from then on, watched him avidly. I managed  to see a few episodes of "The Alaskans" with him, then became a fan of Beau Maverick, Simon Templar, Brett Sinclair, never missing an episode.

I love his early movies, the ones he made with MGM, and then later with Warner Brothers, as well as his later movies, after "The Saint."

I lived in London for a time in the 70's and got the opportunity of seeing my hero in person arriving at movie premieres a few times.  Twice I actually got tickets to attend - "Gold" and "Shout At The Devil." It was then I was lucky enough to get his autograph. It was so thrilling to stand next to the great man, I'll never forget it.

I will always be a big fan of Roger's, he's always been a big part of my life.

I am a new fan. Ive known about him all my life of course but only recently started to call myself a fan.....when my husband bought a set of James Bond dvds and I got to take another look at Roger.... He was charming, funny and genuine, and thats what made him the best Bond for me. The role fit him like a glove. The Saint was a little before my time. I dont have the entire series in my collection yet but working on it. I still have a lot to learn about Roger Moore and look forward to talking to everybody here. Amber, your story is awesome! Did you keep the tickets to Gold and Shout At The Devil? What was he like in person?  :smt026

This is the autograph I got from Roger at the premiere of "Gold" then the programme at the premiere of "Shout At The Devil" which  he signed.  I kept the ticket too.

It was something I'll always remember. At the "Gold" premiere it was rather difficult to get near Roger, but I somehow managed to ask him for his autograph when I saw him in the bar.

At The premiere of "Shout At The Devil" in the interval I couldn't see him anywhere. I even saw where his seat was, but no sign of him. Then when the movie was finished, there were such massive crowds outside, it looked like Roger was going to get mobbed. I went for a little walk about, still inside the cinema, and spotted Roger walking down some back stairs with two men. They seemed to be in a hurry, so I rushed foreward and asked him to sign my programme.

He was ushered into his car, and didn't sign anymore, so I was lucky to catch him.

What fantastic memories you have, Amber! I am envious. It was very nice of him to sign your program when he was in a hurry.

I agree, he could have just hurried by. Shows what a nice man he is.

Sorry for the quality of the pics. (It's a long story!)

Hi, I've been a fan of Roger Moore from his "Simon Templar" Days.  I've seen lots of his movies and tv work, but for me,  his best performance will always be as "The Saint."

Amber, what marvellous memories you have, did you get to actually talk with Roger when you met him?

Welcome to SM, Connie! Glad to have you here.  :smt001

Amber, no need to apologize for the quality fo the pictures you posted, they are perfect, and the most important thing is that you can see what they are all about. You must have a very extensive collection of Roger's stuff. Looking forward to seeing more!

:smt002 The first time I became a roger moore fan was when I was about 7 years old I was walking along past a tv shop one sunday night and the saint was showing on the tv in the window,in them days we never owned a tv so I use to stand there and watch it without sound through the glass with my little brother,a little while after that I was put in a childrens home or convent in mill hill east, north london called st vincents which is run by nuns, they had a signed picture of roger in the main room, and one day as I was staring at it one of the nuns asked me if I liked roger moore I said "yes and the saint".she told me roger was coming to the convent this coming weekend,I knew she was'nt lying because she was a lady of the church, anyway on the saturday we kids are waiting outside in the front gravel drive playing when this white volvo p1800 turns up and you should have seen the look on our faces when roger moore the saint got out with sweets and gifts and we just run around his car and the nuns kept telling us to keep the noise down and don't touch the car,the only let down was the reg plate on the car never said ST1,he stayed for about an hour and later I found out he only lived down the road in a place called debden or something like that.So in truth roger was a true saint even when he was working on the series and it never came as a surprise to me when he started working for UNICEF because he was helping children way back in the early 60's.

Jim,

I think that your story bears a very important significance, because it shows Roger already being a sort of an ambassador for children's well-being way before he started working for UNICEF.

This story also shows that you have been a big fan of Roger's probably longer than most of his fans, and the fact that you still are and very devoted to your Saint site, shows how strong of a fan you are as well.

That's a wonderful story, and a great example of Roger's kindness and generosity.

When I first became a Roger Moore fan

Postby Goodnight007.2 on Sun Oct 15, 2006 9:41 pm

I first became a Roger Moore fan when I was about 9 and my brother and cousin took me to see my first James Bond movie which was The Man With The Golden Gun. (I did not know there had been Sean Connery as the first Bond then).

I remember Scaramangas fun house in the movie scared the hell out of me, but I did enjoy the movie and thought RM was very nice. After that, The Persuaders came on TV while I was still at school, but it was on late at night,so I had to sort of watch it in secret in my bedroom.

After that, I started going to all the JB movies that RM did and have been a major fan ever since. I think when I watched the Persuaders was when I got a crush on him, but when he started in Bond was when I liked him not only for his looks, but also his acting and personality. Now I have nothing but major admiration for him for what he is doing for UNICEF.
