"The Last Time I Saw Paris"

This was Roger's very first movie, made in 1953. What do you think of it, as a movie by itself and as Roger's first role?

On the whole I found the movie pretty tedious, but it was worth sitting through it to see Roger in his very first starring role.

He played a ne'er do well tennis player, not a very pleasant character.

He had to throw a glass of scotch in Van Johnson's face, punch him in the jaw, and walk off with Elizabeth Taylor! I think he performed remarkably well.

I bought this movie on a very bad quality dvd for only 5 bucks at Wal Mart. It's my first other than Bond or Saint movie with Roger, and the fact that it was his first movie made it special. Other than that, I agree with Amber. Scenes with Roger were the best ones, the rest was quite boring.

BTW, thanks for the invite! I LOVE this site!  :smt060

For a lot of "new" actors such as Roger was at the time I think he got a good role in this movie considering Hollywood usually gives bit parts to newbies. I think everyone knew what capabilities RM had as an actor after this film was made..

I have also bought this movie cheaply on DVD, and the quality of the pic is ok, but the sound is bad. But doesn't matter coz I have other movies of his on DVD that are better movies, and better quality.

I first bought this movie on DVD and it was terrible quality of picture and sound. Then, a few months later, I came across it sharing one DVD with "Gold", and got it mainly because of "Gold". This time "Gold" was bad quality but "The Last Time I Saw Paris" was better.   :smt001

I was excited to show it to my Mother-in-law who used to be a big Elizabeth Taylor fan. So we watched the movie together, and she kept making a face every time she saw Van Johnson. She later told me that she wasn't a fan of the actor and throughout the movie was hoping Roger would get into a fight with him.  :smt064 She cheered when Roger punched him.  :smt041  :smt003

I have a question about the movie plot. It had a very sad ending. Who was in your opinion to blame for Elizabeth Taylor's death? Van Johnson or Roger? I blame Van Johnson. He was a rat in treated her very badly.  :smt013

I don't own this one, but I have seen it on tv a few times. Must admit I only sit up and take notice when Roger is on-screen!

Yes it did end sadly, but because the whole thing, apart from Roger, dragged on and on, I had little sympathy for either Van Johnson's or Elizabeth Taylor's characters.

Connie, I agree with you, I think that to be sympathetic with any of the characters in that movie, one had to be a huge fan of either Elizabeth Taylor or Van Johnson. Both of them behaved badly and blamed it all on Paris. There was no excuse.  :smt011 Elizabeth's character was what I'd call "a flake". She discovered that her husband cheated on her and was an alcoholic. Instead of dealing with that or leaving him, all she could do was feel sorry for herself and had an unsuccessful attempt at adultery with Roger. The only two characters that had any kind of personality in the movie, (well, at least they knew what they wanted and went for it), were Roger and Ava Gabor.

I think the only person who needs sympathy is Sir Roger, coz apart from his part in this movie, it was pure soap. I think he added a much needed bright spark.
