Roger to feature on "The Biography Channel"

Postby Amber on Fri Nov 03, 2006 8:44 am

There will be an in-depth interview of Roger on "The Biography Channel" on 16th December. This will be with broadcaster Gloria Hunniford. There was a small article about the show in a newspaper today. Gloria said Roger was wonderful to talk to (she's interviewed him in the past too) and in this latest one, he speaks candidly about his four marriages, and early life.

I'll be sure to report back about it.

Roger on Biography Channel

Postby Goodnight007.2 on Sun Nov 05, 2006 2:19 am

I hate to burst your bubble re this, but there has been several ads for him being interviewed on this and when I have tuned in (online coz I don't have it on tv)it only shows small snippets of the interview, never the full one.

But please let me know if THIS TIME, they will show the full interview online. :smt017

The Biography channel

Maybe the full interview will be shown online after it's been broadcast on tv? I hope so, for all those who can't get the tv channel.

Roger already did a much earlier interview on "The Biography Channel" called "A Matter of Class" which was very good. Glad he's doing a more modern one.

I've got the "Matter of Class" interview, and it will be very interesting what Roger has to say in the latest one. I know he usually doesn't like to talk about his marriages.

Looking foreward to hearing all about it.

Yes, please, tell us about it when you get to see it.

I have "A Matter Of Class", too, and it was a very nice video bio, especially hearing what other actors had to say about Roger. I believe the VHS can still be purchased online. It was a part of a large collection of biographical videos on many Hollywood actors.

There was also another special on Roger, a video bio very similar to "A Matter Of Class". I don't recall the name??

Are you thinking of "Best Of British" Sunny? That was very similar to "A Matter Of Class" and was a tv special, also very good.

Yes! That's the one!  :smt003 Which one did you like better, "A Matter Of Class" or "Best Of British"? Can the latter be purchased on video?

"The Best of British" was part of a BBC tv series of documentaries from around 1999, featuring a famous personality each week. It had interviews, movie and tv clips too, just like the previous documentary, though different, and  seemed faster moving, which made it very interesting.  I noticed too that Roger seemed much more relaxed during the interviews than in "A Matter Of Class."

I don't think "The Best Of British" is available on video.

I saw it for sale on amazon.com recently, on their "used" section. It was going for a ridiculously high price, but can't remember if it was DVD or VHS.

Just seen an ad on the Biography Channel featuring biographies of all the Bond stars. Roger's is  to be shown on 19th November. I have a sneaky feeling they'll just be showing a repeat of "A Matter Of Class." They've done this several times in the past.

LOL, I just went to Amazon and saw the price - close to 50 bucks for the VHS. Hmmmm.....makes me wonder - if it goes for that kind of money, maybe I should sell my own copy... :smt002  :smt003

Here's a pic from "Hello" magazine showing Gloria Hunniford, who interviewed Roger for "The Biography Channel."

The show was broadcast on December 16th, and for one hour Roger discussed frankly his early life, family, career, and his 4 marriages, as well as Unicef. The settings for the interviews were in the beautiful village in the south of France - St. Paul De Vence.

Roger was very relaxed and happy while speaking to Gloria, there was a definite rapport between them. Very soon I'll post some captures from the show, as well as more details of what Roger had to say.

Here are some pics and comments from the show Roger did. Roger was sitting inside and outside "La Colombe D'Or" Restaurant, one of his favourite eating haunts.

Image

Gloria: "You are one of the biggest sex-symbols in the world, how do you live up to it?"

Roger: "I pretend I'm Sean Connery!"

Roger spoke about how Audrey Hepburn first got him interested in Unicef, and from then on he was hooked. A female executive from the charity spoke very highly of him and the hard work he carries out. Roger said "I'm giving something back for all the good things that have happened in my life."

Gloria commented on Roger being an only child. He replied with a big smile "My parents achieved perfection the first time around, why should they try again?" He spoke very affectionately about his parents, and in particular what a gifted man his father was in many ways.

He spoke about his early days attending RADA, where he met his first wife Doorn.   "Doorn was lovely but we were far too young, it didn't work out. We spent a lot of time working apart. That's part of the reason why the marriage broke up - usually one of the reasons for any marriage break-up. We were together for 5 years, and she went through my whole struggle of trying to make a career for myself."

Image

Gloria: "Marriage to Dorothy Squires attracted a lot of publicity over the years, some of it very contraversial. Where did you meet?"

Roger: "We met at a party at her house. I was suddenly introduced to a world I'd never met before." (He said that by this time he and Doorn were drifting apart and the marriage was almost over).

Gloria: "How did you feel regarding her success?"

Roger: "One could not fail to be impressed by her, to watch her perform and and see the depths of her talent. It was quite extraordinary." He went on say that he and Dorothy did a pantomime together (British traditional stage show at Christmas, based on well-known fairy-tales and including music dancing and comedy.) He sang a little of one of the songs to Gloria that he sang in it - "Making Whoopie." She joined in with him, both laughing.

Roger talked about when he went to Hollywood with Dorothy, his early movies and tv series. He had a lot of fun making "Ivanhoe" and said "It was really a gas."

This pic was shown during the show of Roger and Dorothy taken in Hollywood. Is that Carroll Baker on the right?

:smt006 Please note - the rest of the interview is on the next page.
