This story is set in Puerto Rica, and begins with Simon exploring an old fort. There he sees an atrractive lady and starts up a conversation with her, but she is not interested in him and moves on.

Simon is driving to his hotel when he stops to help a woman on the roadside. Her husband is being beaten. Simon goes to help. A poor farmer called Juan and his family are being terrorised by hoodlums, paid by a man called Quire. After a fight with Simon, the hoodlums leave. Juan borrowed some money from Quire to help his tomato farm, and is having difficulty paying the full amount back with the interest. Quire has told them to get off the farm, as soon it will belong to him.

Simon sets off for the hotel and meets the woman who he had spoken to in the fort. Her car had broken down, and Simon stopped to give her a lift. Her name was Tristam Brown and she was on her way to prison! She explained she worked for a large American charity organisation called called The Keele Foundation. Her charity went about giving money to deserving causes, but a requirement was for the recipient to give $20,000 upfront first as a gesture of goodwill. She said she had heard of a very kind benefactor called Quire, and Simon told her he was anything but. Tristram was staying at the same hotel, and they agreed to meet for dinner. Simon checked her out and found she was genuine.

While sharing an intimate dance, Tristam tells Simon that she will be away for 4 days and will hurry back. This gives Simon an idea!

Tristam leaves and Simon learns more about Quire. He goes to a restaurant knowing that Quire will be there, and knowing that Juan will arrive soon to beg for longer to pay. Simon overhears the conversation and the threats Quire gives to Juan. When Juan leaves, Simon gets into conversation with Quire, but does not give his name. Later Simon visits Quire in his office and tells him he is Tristam Brown, and that his charity would like to donate a large amount of money to whatever cause he wants to, but he must first give $20,000 as a sign of goodwill. They arrange to meet afterwards at "Tristams" hotel (which he has just booked in to).

Quire falls for the story, and meets "Tristam" in the hotel and hands over the money. They go down to the hotel reception and put the money into the hotel safe, but Simon cleverly changes the envelope of money to another envelope containing useless bits of paper. Afterwards Simon sees that Tristam has arrived back sooner than expected, and she overhears the conversation Simon has with Quire. A row begins and Tristam wants to know what has been going on in her name. She tells him even though she is mad at him, she is falling in love with him.

Simon has heard that Quire intends to sell off Juan's farm to an American millionaire for development at midnight that very night. Simon and Tristram go to the farm to talk to Juan, and decide that by rights, Juan should have the $20,000 to pay his debt. Juan and his family are delighted and he plans to go to Quire and pay off the debt. Meanwhile Quire went back to "Tristams" hotel and looked in the envelope in the safe and discovered the money had gone.

Quire sends his hoodlams back to Juan's farm, and keeps them prisoner there until the midnight deadline has passed. Juan's young son escapes and finds his way to Simons hotel, where he is having dinner with Tristam. Simon hurries to the farm and frees Juan and his family. Juan heads for Quires office to pay the debt. The American business man is also there, as well as Simon and Tristam. The business man is a very honest and decent man, and when he learns of the dirty tricks Quire has gone to, in order to sell him the land, he refuses to buy it from Quire. Just a minute to go, and the debt is paid. Next scene, everybody is in the hotel having dinner, Juan and his family, Simon, Tristam and the business man. He has bought Juan's property for £100,000, and Juan and his family are very happy. It means a new start for them.
