"Gold Of The Seven Saints"

Postby Amber on Thu Feb 08, 2007 12:08 pm

Roger made this movie in 1961 for Warner Brothers, which also starred Clint Walker. They played a couple of fur trappers who had found gold, unfortunately some baddies had discovered this, and began chasing them across the desert, in order to steal it from them.

Roger's character was Shaun Garret, a very witty Irishman - and incidentally he mastered the accent perfectly well. The rapport between Roger and Clint, plus their funny dialogue was a joy to watch.

In the process, Roger got shot by the baddies, but survived, and was tortured by the baddies when they eventually caught up. Roger suffered a lot during the torture scene. Wet rags were wrapped around his chest, and he was laid out in the hot sun. So that when the rags dried they would tighten, and so force Shaun to tell them where the gold was hidden. Unfortunately this all became extremely realistic and painful, and as a result of  dehydration Roger had great problems with his kidneys for many years.

Towards the end of the movie, Shaun and his partner take shelter with  a Mexican rancher friend,(who was also after the gold)  and there were some very funny scenes as Roger and Clint both flirted  with an attractive girl who lived at the ranch. Right at the end of the movie Roger did some very dangerous stunt horse riding in a  fast flowing river. It was a real shame that the movie was filmed in black and white. The landscapes were beautiful, and would have enhanced the movie all the more.

Thanks for those pics Amber. I like the first one best, Roger looks mean and moody! The ones of him dancing look like a lot of fun. Though he certainly suffered for his art, winding up with kidney problems like he did.

I have read about this movie, but can't seem to buy it anywhere. Is it available on DVD?

Just for the record, did Roger and Clint get away from their pursuers at the end of the movie?

Though Westerns were very popular at that time, I could never quite get used to seeing RM in them. But this was a good movie, had a good story and lots of action.

I don't believe the movie is available on DVD yet, which I think is a shame, because this really wasn't a bad movie.  :smt001

Hi Sunny

I don't know about overseas, but here in Australia, a lot of 'old' movies are coming out in dvd, just takes time. As I've said previously, I got a cheap copy of The Last Time I Saw Paris, and I looked in the shops the other day, they are starting to sell other classics too, so I think it is just a matter of time before GOTSS comes out on DVD (or at least I hope so). :smt001

I saw the original movie when it was showing at my local cinema in the 60's, and managed to buy a VHS copy on e-bay a few years ago.

I too wish it would come out on DVD, together with the other two Warner Brothers movies Roger did - "The Miracle" and "The Sins of Rachel Cade."

Spoiler*

Connie, yes Roger and Clint's characters did manage to escape from the two groups of people who were after their gold.  After a very dramatic chase on horseback, riding through a fast flowing river, they discovered that their bags of gold fastened onto their saddlebags had split open,  and the gold had disappeared somewhere in the river! So they were left with nothing.

I think that the only reason they released The Last Time I Saw Paris in the US was because this was a movie Elizabeth Taylor and Van Johnson made in their prime. Unfortunately, even then I haven't seen a really high quality restored copy of it.

Found a few  publicity pics of Roger from "Gold Of The Seven Saints." The actress is Leticia Roman. Lucky girl!

Notice how the name of the movie had a lot of meaning for Roger's tv and movie roles of the future?

In the movie, Clint Walker is taking a bath in the bath-tub, and Leticia Roman makes a big thing of scrubbing his back. Both are flirting like crazy! Roger sees this and feels very left-out, stands in the doorway and asks when it will be his turn!

Here's a pic of Roger and Clint in that very bath-tub.

If you go onto Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzRls9pP-QI there is a great clip of Roger from this movie. It is included in clips of Clint Walker, Roger's co-star in the movie, and is one of my favourite clips from the movie. A chance to see Roger as you've never seen him before.

To set the scene: Sean (Roger) and Clint (Rainbolt) have arrived at a Mexican ranch, the owner being a friend of Rainbolt's. There is to be a party, and Rainbolt is really enjoying making Sean jealous of all the attention the woman is giving him. It is working because Sean is looking on with envy in his eyes. He had been shot earlier and the doctor is tending his wound, when Sean pulls out a knife and tells the doctor he will give him some of his gold if he doesn't tend him. Then he walks to where Rainbolt is bathing and asks when he will have his bath?

Plus you get to see Roger dancing in the clip. It's a pity the whole clip isn't shown of Roger doing a kind of Irish jig at the end. :smt007

Thanks for the link Amber. :smt007 I loved the clip, and Roger was a very nifty dancer! I like his hair too. :smt002 I wonder if any more clips from the movie will be posted there? Well, I can live in hope.
