|
|
Well, if your a fan of Black Metal, you should have a favorite vocalist. My favorite are as follows:
1. Abbath (Immortal, I) If you have heard his vocals, then you know what sets this dude appart from the rest of the scene. His vocals just sound damn nasty and raw. No one else can do a "BBBLLLLLAAAAAaaaa..." like him, and make it not anoying.
2.Satyr (Satyricon) This guy's vocals have changed over the years, but have remained great. His vocals are rough and a little gritty, but that's good in Black Metal.
3, Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone) What can I say about him? His Black shrieks are what made an impact on the scene. Just listen to thier 2nd and 3rd albums and you'll see what I mean.
My least favorite ones are:
Varg Vikernes (Burzum) Now, I love Burzum, but I can't stand his vocals (the ones on Filosofem are okay). He sounds like he slamed his dick in a car door and can't get it out. Just "AAAHHHUU!" for half of the songs. Musicaly, this guy rules, but vocaly he sucks.
I can't think of any more to really mention, but feel free to post your thoughts! _________________ When night falls, she cloaks the world

I have to agree with you on Immortal and Satyricon.
As far as other bands go:
Dark Funeral: Emperor Magus Caligula
Gorgoroth: Gaahl
IInath: Narrenschiff |

My favourite BM vocalist must be Shane Rout of Abyssic Hate. Like Varg but harsher and less wailing involved.
Honourable mentions include;
Varg (I love his vocals to death)
Lord Belphegor - Immortal Hammer (evil as fuck sounding in his native Slovak and good tone as well)
Mikael - Craft (see IH, minus singing in native language) |

My favourites are the following:
1) Aleksey and Ivan (M8L8TH): The dual vocals of these two guys are totally sick and they accompany greatly the music of M8L8TH. Singing in Russian helps as I tend to appreciate more the bands that sing in their native tongue (plus, as a linguist Russian interest me a lot as a language).
2) Lutomysl (Lutomysl): Speaking of sick vocals I cannot leave Lutomysl out. He is great both musically and vocally (as the sole member of the band).
3) Necroabyssious (Varathron): His very deep growls are very inspiring to me. Plus, his work with Varathron (especially the debut album) is undisputedly great.
4) Necromayhem aka Sakis (Rotting Christ): Sakis is the only vocalist that I know of that is actually aided by his bad English accent. His bad accent convey a great deal of emotion into the RC songs. At least his Greek accent is better |

Yikes, I think Emperor is a terrible and annoying vocalist. |

Favourite black metal vocalist:
Mortuus from Marduk. Very full, warm and powerful voice. Not shreiky, very brutal-sounding. Definitely evil sounding too. Love it.
Least favourite:
Abbath from Immortal. Since hatred for music can be a lot more pronounced than love, I'm going to ignore the obvious ones, such as the ones which sound whispers, or the really high pitched shreaking. Moving on, when I bought At the Heart of Winter, Abbath's frog-croaking vocals totally ruined the album for me. augh.
Or the worst may be that guy from I'm in a Coffin. lol. _________________ NU-MOD |

I personally love Varg's vocals.
He puts so much emotion into his singing.
I also like Gaahl. Because he has a unique voice.
Abbath is pretty good too.
EDIT: I forgot Legion of Marduk.

Dead and Attila of Mayhem. The former has a very heavy, growling type of vocals that would fit well in death or black. If he did anything death metal before his death, someone let me know. The latter's vocals are disturbing (in a very good way) and are not too difficult to understand with a little bit of experience dealing with harsh vocals. Nobody could work as well on DMDS as he did. _________________ Everything here is so cold

In no particular order as I really cant decide on an absolute favoutie;
Shagrath: especially on the original Stormblast, the song Devil's Path and Enthroned Darkness Triumphant as his vocals so very venomous and full of savagery. I like the newer stuff as well though as he still retains his demonic qualities just now you can tell more of what he sings!
Ghaal: His work in Gorgoroth is stunning but I really like his vocals for Trelldom as he uses more of a range and even uses some really deep and odd 'clean' almost chant which sound very sinister.
Hoest: Very savage, I really like the perfromance he did for Rangnarok even though some people slag it off.
Dolk: Another old school style approach which is really raw and hateful and perfectly suits Kampfar's style.
Gallhammer: Are all brilliant vocalists at least in my opinion. They sound completely inhuman and horrific. I think the track Crusifixion really is a good example.
Other ones of note: Jens Rydén ex Naglfar, Azathoth (Matthias Jell) ex Dark Fortress, Protector & Silenius of Summoning who are extemely atmospheric! I have to mention Atilla who seems brilliant in what ever band he is in. |

While I don't actually enjoy listening to Silencer or Nattramn, I have to say that the bastard is by far the best at what he does. Never before (or after) had I been shaken by music, but that guy's agonized shrieks are penetrating if listened to in the appropriate mood. I have to give him credit for that at least here.
But my favorites would probably be Abbath from what I've heard so far (just At the Heart of Winter) and Jon Nödtveidt. Their vocal work pleases my ears greatly.
And I just plain don't like Attila. Maybe he'll grow on me, but I doubt it. |

Silencer just makes me laugh. BANSHEE SCREAMS FTW. However, I can't listen to this stuff on a regular basis. And did you hear about the story of how Silencer almost destroyed some little girl's brain? I lol'd at that. _________________ I just want to eat your brains. |
