Among the endless mallcore bands, System of a Down always stand out as the most creative and interesting.  The vocals, for one, are quite varied, from almost death metal bellows to speech to punk-style singing.  The music is very random, but is at the same time often very memorable.  The names are cool to boot. Razz

So, what are your opinions and comments on this band?  Do you want them to come back from their break?  Do you absolutely hate them?  Do you only like one or two of their albums?

Discuss.

I have Toxicity and Steal This Album!. Admittedly, I like Toxicity better, but Steal This Album! has some of my favourite SOAD songs, like Fuck the System and Mr. Jack.

Great band, I need to pick up some more of their work.

I never liked them really. I remember listening to a few songs by them on youtube and just instantly being turned off.

I don't know if we should keep SOAD in here. Clearly, their first 3 albums were an experimental type of alternative metal, and with the last 2 they went more to a rock but still somewhat experimental style. I'd know, I have all of their albums Razz So umm... do you guys want to move this thread to the Experimental Rock area or keep it in here? I know that with a band like System, it's hard to decide, so I want you guys to help out.

Also, their debut was their best. With songs like Soil, Mind, Suite-Pee, Sugar, War, and PLUCK, you can't go wrong. Especially Soil and PLUCK... those were my anthems back in the day, hahaha.

Well, now that I think about it, it would go well in the Experimental Rock section.

And yes, that album is awesome.  Suite-Pee starts out with a wicked guitar line.  And Sugar is beyond cool.

Yuppers. I'm going to leave a shadow so that people can be redirected to the experimental rock section. *proceeds to move thread*

SOAD was one of the first bands I listened to.
Toxicity and Steal This Album! were my favorites, I could have listened to either of those albums for hours on end.
I don't listen to them anymore, but they were one of my favroite bands for about two years of my life.

I always thought SOAD was nu/alt metal, with a bit of avant-garde/prog touch, but experimental rock? Nahhh. Oh well.

You need to listen to more experimental rock. Start with Mr. Bungle's self-titled. I own it and love it.

I used to love the first three albums but it's been years since I last heard them. Still, better than all the other mainstream bands! Not really amazing regarding composition but they're fun all right. I hated that Serj solo thing, heard that SOB thing once (not interested to listen again) ... so yeah, it'd be cooler if they were back together. Also I used to have all of their unreleased demo stuff, and some of those songs were miles above their album material (like Cherry).

Me too. It just sounded boring.

I used to be a huge SOAD fan around 2 years ago B.Y.O.B. is still one of my favorite rock songs.

Mesmerize/Hypnotize were awful albums. They only had a couple of good tracks on them (B.Y.O.B, Vicinity Of Obscenity), but most were rubbish.

Their self-titled and Toxicity is where it's at. Steal This Album! was alright, as well. They're probably the better of the nu-bands.

I mean come on. With lyrics such as...

Bounce! Pogo, pogo, pogo, pogo, pogo, pogo, pogo

...you can't go wrong! Laughing

Really? I liked Mezmerize/Hypnotize... it was in a different direction than the rest of their albums but was still good.
