Shockingly, there's no threads on death metal as of yet, so I'm going to change this by posting about my favourite type of of death metal: old school death metal!

Old school death metal in itself is a broad term - some people think old school is bands that started in the 80s and the 80s only, while some think early 90s is still old school, and some other opinions I don't care about. However, my OSDM time period is every death metal band formed before '93, at the latest. OSDM doesn't have an indefinite style like, say, melo-death or tech-death but still.

Anyway, some of my favourites include the almighty Death!, Ripping Corpse, Disincarnate, Solstice (US), Morgoth (Ger), early Autopsy, etc. Of course, there's thousands of OSDM bands I know, so if there's any recomendations you want, I'm your girl  Wink

No old-school DM thread is complete without Altars of Madness.  This is THE epitome of early death.  It's probably the heaviest and most blasphemous thing to come out of the scene.  Every song on it is fantastic, and some of the lyrics are gold.  Check it out:

Maze of Torment:

Maze of torment... MAZE OF DEATH!

Chapel of Ghouls

Dead, your God is dead
Fools, your God is dead!

Just awesome.  Oh, and the music is great too.  Not to mention it has one of the best album covers I've ever seen.

Meh, I like some old school DM, but i prefer the new(ish) stuff.
Morbid Angel, Atheist, Death.
Good stuff.

EDIT: As mentioned below me, Vader.
I wans't sure they were old school DM, but I guess they are.
I love Vader.

Hahahah, that reminded me of Vader.

Even though Helleluyah!!! (God is Dead) is on their new album, it's beastly

GOD IS DEAD! DEAD! HALLELUYAH!

My friend parodies it by saying A CERTAIN RELIGIOUS FIGURE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IS DEAD! lol.

I prefer usually more modern Death Metal acts but I'm willing to try some old school Death Metal. Any recommendations?

Personally, I disagree with you here. There are a lot of non-OSDM bands that were formed before '93. Septic Flesh for example were formed in 1990 and they always played their own brand of Atmospheric Death Metal. The same story with Eucharist which were formed in 1989 and their sound is decisively Melodic Death Metal. It happens vice-versa, too. You cannot say that Funebrarum are not OSDM because they were formed in 1999. It simply wouldn't be logical.

For me OSDM is a subgenre of Death Metal just like melo-death and tech-death. And a damn good subgenre to be precise Wink

Excuse my ignorance here, but I don't understand your point. You say OSDM is a definitely style yet name bands who aren't in the norm?

Well, as I mentioned, OSDBM isn't very defined, but for some ''starter''-bands, try, say...Death, Entombed's first two, Morgoth's Cursed, Carcass, Disincarnate etc.

I remember listening to Entombed a long time ago. I can't say I liked them much. But Carcass is amazing. I don't think I've ever listened to any of the others though.

No. I tried to prove to you that the definition you gave to OSDM is mistaken (by your definition every DM band that was formed before '93 can be called OSDM) and these bands where the examples of why I disagree with your definition.

In my opinion, OSDM is a solid, defined style and that it's still played by bands like Funebrarum.

EDIT: Typos

Morgoth is generally just straight-up no-bullshit death metal, so it's not going to be like Atheist or anything, lol. But Disincarnate and Death have a really technical touch to their music. I'd sugegst Individual Thought Patterns for Death.

Oh, alright. I agree that there are some fault in my argument but I'm still going to stay with it. Also, '93 wasn't so much a set in stone year either, but just a sort of guess. I also agree that alot of OSDM can have a very defined style, but there's bands like, say, Atheist or Pestilence, who are still OSDM but always have that definite-style.

I can agree with that reasoning. However, I still cannot consider Atheist an OSDM band but we can't please everyone, right? Wink

You're not the only one who made a mistake here. I've read it wrong from the very beginning. I read "Atheist and Pestilence are OSDM and have their own defined style".

Anyway, it doesn't change anything. I still think that Atheist cannot fit in the OSDM category but that's another story. The important think is that I probably need to see an eye doctor Rolling Eyes
