The only pre-death metal band I can tolerate is Sepultura. To me, Death Metal started to get good in 1989 when the Florida DM scene kicked into full gear, only to get overtaken by the NYDM scene 2 years later. Incantation FTW. _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog
Death metal's peak, in my humble and honest opinion, was Cryptopsy's None So Vile.
I could never get into Crapt...err, Cryptopsy, and surely their latest offering doesn't help. None So Vile, despite it being considered their best word, to me is only a cacophonous mess of directionless technicality and brutality. Lord Worm is a very, erm...interesting vocalist, to say the least. _________________ NU-MOD
It only sounds directionless because of the mixing. The vocals and the drums are mixed higher than everything else which creates a chaotic sound. Its far from directionless, I've never heard an album as tight, brutal and catchy at the same time. I get a kick out of it every time I hear it and it shits over any Death Metal album released before it, even over (can't believe I'm saying it) Onward to Golgotha and Cause of Death. _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog
I bought Altars of Madness...and now I'm hitting myself in the head wondering, and I didn't listen to this before why?
It's okay, we all have our problems. You called yourself the Goddess of Death Metal without hearing Morbid Angel, and that's okay too. We're here to support you.
Best Death Metal album I've heard: Entombed - Clandestine.
They write catchy, kick-ass songs with one of the more distinguishable death growlers. They're both brutal and they have their own sound, as I've not heard much else that sounds like Clandestine. I'm not a huge fan of Left Hand Path, but then again I never gave it that much of a chance.
edit: I did forget Incantation though; I like them better.

Well, I had Covenant for the longest time, but other than Rapture, Angel of Disease and God of Emptiness I couldn't get into it, so I figured I shouldn't mess with their other stuff. _________________ NU-MOD
My first post in these waters. Okay, as some of you know, I'm a sucker for newer death metal, like 2000 onwards. I like new death metal, and it's been a little controversial. You know what? I don't really care! Having said that, there are a few of the old-school death metal albums I like:
Early Gorefest - Mindloss, False, Erase: This is probably one of the few occasions where the older albums are better. I do like "Rise To Ruin" and "La Muerte", too, but the early ones are where it's at for this band. I like all 3 of these releases, and listen to them more. They just do something I like...can't exactly put my finger on it.
Early Gorguts - Considered Dead, The Erosion Of Sanity: Some good albums here, too. I like "Considered Dead" more than it's successor, but they're both pretty sweet albums. The muddy production, which I frown upon, doesn't bother me too much.
Atheist - all albums: They rule. 'Nuff said.
Jumpin' Jesus - The Art Of Crucifying: A weird album, if you can find it. I think it drags on a little bit, but enjoyable nonetheless. It's a difficult album to digest, but it's worth it in the end.
Fear Factory - Soul Of A New Machine: Debut album, and it's quite good. I gave it a rest for a long time, then came back to it, and realised how good it actually is. Like Jumpin' Jesus, it drags a bit (17 tracks), but it's a good slab of death metal, which reminds you of what Fear Factory could've been (Transgression for the goddamn lose!).
I think that might be it, actually. If there's more I think of, I'll probably post again. It's a pretty poor list compared to what others like, but I think I can live with that. _________________ Error #139003B: No signature detected. Abort | Retry | Fail
First time I've ever seen someone else mention Disincarnate and Ripping Corpse, but that's a good thing - both are some of the best death metal bands the world has to offer _________________ NU-MOD
