It seems like, as what always seems to happen in rock and metal circles, progressive rock and prog metal have been left out of this forum.
As xXM already knows in great detail, I'm a big fan of prog, much more than any other genre. When I joined her forum, I was a bit....annoyed. Not surprised, but...annoyed.
Because when bands like Dream Theater and Opeth are doing as well as they are after being around for as long as they have, it's a bit annoying to see prog left out.
And if you do make a prog forum (rock or metal), I'd make sure to always frequent it and spread the knowledge. _________________ Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live.
I suggested adding sections for Progressive Metal and Rock a while ago when the forums were being constructed. Though personally I'm not a fan of it I know that a lot of people are. So I'm all for it personally.
Melancholia brought this up to me one day, and I was the one who disagreed to have it in the first place.
Concerning progressive metal: usually, I've seen it involve forms other kinds of metal. It really is more a structure of the sound rather than the sound itself. By the way, we have a general metal section
Concerning rock: I've no idea why we can't put this stuff under hard rock. Again, it's more of a structure. _________________ I just want to eat your brains.
Well, you're the admin, but I can say definitively that prog metal and prog rock bands have distinctly different sounds than bands from other genres.
While the whole point of being "progressive" is supposed to be doing things without any sort of standard or limit, there are certain similarities in musical style that tie them all together.
But, hey..... _________________ Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live.

Also, I must point out that I went by the biggest genres I could think of. Progressive metal does not seem big enough. _________________ I just want to eat your brains.
I'm not going to start throwing record sales numbers around or anything, but I just have a hard time believing the 'bigger genre' point.
And if it's as small of a genre as you claim, what better way for it to get a bit more exposure than to show its uniqueness from everything else? _________________ Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live.

I did say the biggest ones I could think of. Also, since the ones I've heard seem a quite mixed, they'd be best suited for general metal. If you can show me some bands that aren't like that, then I may consider it. I'm into looking for new music, anyway _________________ I just want to eat your brains.
Pain of Salvation, Ayreon, and Shadow Gallery. That's from the heavier side.
On the prog rock side, there's Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, and IQ.
Tool is even considered under the progressive umbrella by many. They've toured with King Crimson, even.
And on the topic of King Crimson, there's all the classic bands, like Gentle Giant, and of course Genesis. Rush, too. And my personal favorite from that era, Yes.
And than you had Marillion and IQ in the 80s.
I'll go on, if you like. _________________ Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live.
Do go on. As much as possible would be needed. It may take time to add these new sections, but I'd rather know what I'm getting in on then add the forums needlessly. That's why we only really added what we knew of. I'm sure I can fuck around during classes in school and listen to some new music on my ipod, hahaha. _________________ I just want to eat your brains.
I'm sure you've heard of Dream Theater. Anything by them is good. They are the champions.
There's also Threshold, who are also fantastic. I recommend anything from them, too. Their entire catalog. They are the 1B to DT's 1A.
-If you want me to narrow down Threshold, go with their Hypothetical or Subsurface albums....or Clone...or Instinct Extinct.
And Seventh Wonder from Sweden. Anything from their last album "Waiting in the Wings", but I'd highlight "Devil's Inc", and their new album Mercy Falls is coming out, but I'm sure it's leaked by now.
And last but not least, Opeth. I recommend something from Still Life or Blackwater Park. Or if you want something mellower from the, the Damnation album. But everything from them is fantastic. If you like heavier stuff, Deliverance is the album for you. Opeth's first two albums, Orchid and Morning rise are very.....Scandinavian Metal/Almost Black Metal as well, but still with the Opeth dynamic of going from heavy to clean.
There's also Ayreon. Ayreon is an interesting duck altogether. I'd NEED a whole thread on Ayreon.
If you want something not as heavy, I recommend Frost* from the UK and their debut album Milliontown, specifically "Hyperventilate" and "Black Light Machine. Their next album is coming out soon.
Or Spock's Beard with their original singer Neal Morse. Day For Night, anything from The Kindess of Strangers Album.
Some older bands like Genesis. Keep in mind that Genesis with Peter Gabriel and post are two totally different sounds. For Peter Gabriel's era, I recommend Nursery Crime, Foxtrot, or The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
Back to now, there's Porcupine Tree. Porcupine Tree, I can best describe as..."What Radiohead COULD be, if they tried". They are the all-encompassing band that merges psychadelia, ambient and some of the heaviest sounds into their own unique style. Their frontman, Steven Wilson is a genius musician and producer, who did a few of Opeth's albums. _________________ Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live.

And if you don't want songs filling up your iPod, you can listen to Progulus Radio. _________________ Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live.
Just avoid their first album. The self-titled one. Seriously. You'd be amazing how much difference a change in singers can make. _________________ Through nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to live.
I'll look into those, but for now, keep the prog metal under general metal, alrighty? And the prog rock, I guess, under other. It may take me a month to go through all that stuff, who knows. Thank-you for your feedback and your patience. _________________ I just want to eat your brains.
