Holy fucking shit. Lalu's Oniric Metal is amazing. It took me a while to get into it but I can't stop listening. _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog
Yes, it is strange, because in terms of musical instrumentation, it doesn't vary much from Pagan's Mind or Anubis Gate - but there's something magical about it.
Yeah, its not much different from Anubis Gate or Pagans Mind. Even the vocals sound similar to Anubis Gate. I guess its one of those albums that have one of those secret special ingredients which make it become so addictive. _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog
My only problem with it is that goddamned 18 minute monster of a song. I never get the point of making them that long. Dream Theater, Symphony X, et. al, I never understand the point of making such long songs for Power/Prog metal - the worst in this regard is Eidolon though.
I actually think that song is okay, but yeah, ultra long songs are really useless most of the times. Unless the band does a real good job at it. _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog
I told a friend of mine to listen to them. He listened and told me that they were ripping off Tool. Ugh.. what is it with Tool fans? _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog
Why was Slauter Xstroyes mentioned? They're traditional metal not progressive metal...
Anyway, progressive metal kinda sucks. Mainly the ''hey I like Dream Theater too!'' (Symphony X, Pagan's Mind) type prog bands or the Rhapsody-but-even-suckier type power/prog bands (Vision Divine)...for me to like something ''progressive'', it has to be really subtle, like Individual Thought Patterns-era Death or the like. _________________ NU-MOD
Feh. I'd say Scenes From a Memory, but I don't feel like acting like a bunch of Metallica fans who equate Kevin Moore with Cliff Burton.
Scenes From a Memory was extremely boring and tiresome to even listen to except for ''The Spirit Carries On'', and that's only because it's hilariously crappy. Seriously, Scenes From a Memory was too progressive for its own good. If you really want to get into Dream Theater - which I have no idea why you would, because in the end, they become very tiresome - I'd go for Images & Words. Images & Words really sticks to my mind mostly because of the 80s-like production which I always love to hear. _________________ NU-MOD
Images and Words is okay, not great. It seems too overblown at times. In my opinion the best Prog metal albums are
Lalu - Orinic Metal
Anubis Gate - Andromeda Unchained
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
I only recently got into Paradise Lost and I've realized that its actually their best album. The first time I heard it, i thought this is fucking horrible!! Now its one of my all time favorite albums. I've loved Anubis Gate ever since I first heard Andromeda Unchained, its just so amazing. And even though I only heard Oniric Metal a week ago thanks to Empyreal, its so fucking great, I'm listening to it all the time. _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog

Slauter Xstroyes has enough progressive moments to be considered prog. Read my earlier posts in this thread. I guess they're not strict prog, but they're more complex than a lot of straight Heavy Metal bands.
And all of the bands you listed are good, although I see where you're coming from with disliking them - there really isn't enough innovation. Although Symphony X aren't anything like Dream Theater, I would advise you to listen closer. But it's nice to find bands with originality like Heavenly's latest, or Beyond Twilight and Outworld. Or After Forever's last few albums. Or the aforementioned Lalu.
I love Images and Words, don't know what you guys are talking about. Scenes from a Memory is ridiculous, but sometimes it's kind of fun.
