There isn't a board for Prog Metal so yeah.

So, to kick things off, why do you like Progressive Metal, and which bands are your favorite? What are the things you dislike about Progressive metal?

Prog Metal is slowly becoming my favorite Metal subgenre, right next to Death metal and Thrash metal. Until a month ago, the only band from this genre which I actually liked was Symphony X. I listened to this band called Manticora (which you all should check out, btw) and I was hooked. I dug deeper for some other good enjoyable prog bands, and found Circus Maximus, which is my third favorite band in the prog metal genre, next to Symphony X and Manticora. Anubis Gate are pretty awesome, and I highly reccomend everyone to check out their album "Andromeda Unchained." I've recently been listening to Nevermore a lot too.

The only thing I don't like about prog metal is that a lot of bands just drag their songs to make them feel more longer and more "epic". Its good if they have a long song AS LONG as they don't repeat the song over and over again. One band I haven't been able to get into is Dream Theater. All my friends like them, but I just fall asleep midway through their songs.

I guess I am a prog fan, but it's getting hard to say that these days, with all the shitty bands like Biomechanical, Orphaned Land and Evergrey being labeled as such. And Nevermore, too, what the fuck. Horrible band, nothing proggy about them at all.

Symphony X is very good, I like them a lot. Circus Maximus and Dream Theater too. Manticora, judging from the songs I've heard, is okay, if unspectacular. Andromeda Unchained is an amazing album. I also enjoy Threshold a lot, and am currently obsessed with After Forever's last two albums.

What about 80s Prog metal? The kind where it's less about keys and 20 minute epics, but more about complex riff arrangements and vocal lines. Fates Warning's Awaken the Guardian and The Spectre Within, for example. Awesome stuff.

edit: And listen to the latest Heavenly album. Progressive bliss.

Can you tell me some good 80's prog metal bands or albums? I'd love to check out some more prog metal. How different is it from the progressive metal I listen to? Other than having complex riff arrangements and focusing more on vocal lines. Are Savatage considered Prog metal? Because i like theme a lot.

I listened to Biochemical, they didn't seem THAT bad to me... And Nevermore get a lot of criticism, but I really like their music. Its not everyday that you listen to bands that are technical as fuck and are enjoyable as well. But everyone has his own opinion

A lot of people love Psychotic Waltz, although I unfortunately haven't tracked down any of their music yet.

As for other prog...well I guess it wasn't really a valid genre back in the 80s, aside from Rush, who aren't straight ahead metal anyway. Check out Crimson Glory for more sophisticated, well written Power Metal that could qualify as Prog, as well as later Manilla Road, very intriguing stuff.

Savatage? Well, if you read my reviews you probably know what I think of them. But Edge of Thorns is a fairly proggy album, and that is one of my favorites ever.

The 80s stuff is just less defined as "prog," it's just complex music in general. There was Manowar, there was Omen and there was Maiden, and then you had the more complex bands that could be labeled "prog" like Fates Warning and Slauter Xstroyes (who you should also check out, they're like JP's Painkiller fit into a USPM mode on their second album!).

I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting.

I'll have to check them out then. The name of the band sounds... core-ish though.

I'm not much of a progressive metal fan but I liked some of the songs I heard from Opeth.

Excuse me while I smile smugly.

I mentioned this in this thread not too long ago.

Progressive Metal is my favorite sub genre, genre of all.

And if you have a problem with Dream Theater, give the band Threshold a try.

I describe them to people as "Dream Theater with some of the extra fat cut off".

They are definitely a prog metal band, but they are a bit more composition-oriented.

Here's their official page.  I recommend any of their last 4 albums, but most specifically "Hypothetical".

And if you like Death Metal, I'd give Opeth a try, if I were you.

Opeth aren't for Death Metal fans; there's nothing DM-ish about them aside from the vaguely harsh vocals.

Exactly.

That's why I mentioned them in the PROGRESSIVE thread. Wink

Opeth, Tool (they aren't metal but wikipedia says so and wiki never lies!! Razz ) and Dream Theatre are three bands I could never figure out. I like the song "Deliverance" by Opeth though.

As for Threshold, I'll definitely give them a try today.

Slauter Xstroyes have a wierd name but Winter Kill is awesome!

Lemur Voice, what's wrong with the name? Sounds normal to me. Better than Symphony X or Sun Caged.

This is a cool animal, I just think it's a silly name for a metal band. I'll listen to em though.

Glad you like Slauter Xstroyes too. Really nothing else like 'em.

Lemur Voice is a crappy name now that I know what it really is. I thought Lemur was some sort of meteor or something until now.

Is Free The Beast as good as Winter Kill? There are no reviews of that album.
