This is the introductory thread of the Punk subforum of Sonic Nexus. This is the place to talk about your favourite band(s) and Punk subgenre(s).

Personally, I love a lot of bands with the majority of them coming from the Crust Punk and Oi! subgenres. My favourite Crust band is Septic Death with Capitalist Casualties coming second. In Oi! I'm an admirer of the Italian and Spanish scenes with bands like Los Fastidios, Non Servium, Oi! The Arrase and Ostiada Oi! being the bands that I listen the most when I listen to Oi!. Of course, I like bands from other scenes too like Angelic Upstarts (and who doesn't) and Cock Sparrer. I am also keen on the Greek Punk scene with bands such as Valpourgia Nyxta (excellent Folk Punk), Arxi Tou Telous and Anatellon Tromos (Crust Punk / Thrash Metal hybrid) being my favourites.

I've never really been much of a Punk Rock person. I do enjoy The Distillers, Wednesday 13, AFI (old) and Murderdolls from time to time though.

Hmm, the bands you mentioned are plain Punk Rock. Have you ever listened to other Punk subgenres like Crust, Oi! and Ska Punk?

I've never listened to Oi! or Ska Punk. The only Crust Punk band I've listened to is The Piass. I liked what I heard.

I just gave a listen to Fat Fetishism and it's indeed a good Crust song. I see that you're very interested in the Japanese music scene and culture. If that's true then you have to give a listen to Guillotine Terror (Japanese Crust) and GISM (the most historical Japanese Hardcore Punk band in existence). I bet that you'd like those to.

As long as Oi! is concerned I would advice you to give a listen to Angelic Upstarts, Los Fastidios, Ostiada Oi! and Non Servium. That would give you a clear image of what Oi! is. For Ska Punk you should give a listen to Ska-P.

Here are some videos for you to watch:

Angelic Upstarts - Solidarity:

Non Servium - Ratas:

Los Fastidios - Birra, Oi! e divertimento:

Enjoy!  Very Happy

Thanks. They were interesting. I've never really explored the Punk Rock genre much. Ska Punk seemed rather odd though. I really enjoyed the last song.

The Los Fastidios one? They're the ones that put me into Punk. Very good band and Birra, Oi! e divertimento is among their best songs (along with Amici, Friends and Contiamo Su Di Voi). From the songs I posted above though my clear favourite is Non Servium's Ratas.

Smash Mouth is, I'm pretty sure, ska punk (at least the lesser-known songs).  I really enjoy them.  I like straight-up punk rock like the Ramones (and it's in my singing range, too!).  The only hardcore punk I listen to is the Sex Pistols, and a couple of Misfits/Dead Kennedys songs, and the Clash's "I Fought the Law."

I should explore the genre a bit more.

Those aren't hardcore punk at all. Anyway, my fav punk band is probably Amebix, who basically invented my fav subgenre of punk (crust). Anybody got good obscure crust bands to recommend?

Hmm... I've never looked into punk rock too heavily. I mean, I did love God Save The Queen from The Sex Pistols, and some stuff from the Ramones, but that's the only stuff I really got into. Oh and I guess since No Doubt was considered Ska Punk to some extent, that counts a bit, right? Razz I should re-explore the glory days.... anyone have any good Ska Punk for me? Like, the kind of stuff I should start with when learning about Ska Punk.

Well, the newest Darkthrone album "FOAD" is crust punk with Black Metal elements. It's pretty damn good, but I like thier older stuff better.

The only punk I like is any band that Wednesday 13 was/is in.

The lesser-known Smash Mouth material can be very ska punky.

I'd recommend Ska-P to you. I have posted a Ska-P video earlier in this thread (I posted Mestizaje to be precise) that could put you in the Ska-P spirit.

Sure. As I said earlier Crust is one of my favourite Punk subgenres. Here you go:

1) Skaven - Great Crust with a Doomy quality. If you liked Amebix's Monolith, you'll love them.

2) Guillotine Terror - One of the leading Japanese Crust bands. Lyrics in Japanese (most of the time).

3) GISM - They're not exactly Crust (I'd rather classify them as Hardcore Punk that often borders Speed Metal) but you owe to yourself to check out those Asian legends.

4) Anatellon Tromos - Crust Punk that borders Thrash Metal and has a slight doomy quality. Highly recommended. Lyrics in Greek.

5) Capitalist Casualties - Speedy Crust with vocals that easily border Thrash Metal. Among my favourite Crust bands.

6) Septic Death - Words lose their meaning when it comes for Septic Death. A must for every Crust fan.

7) Psychosis - Very good metallic Crust with lyrics that border Death / Thrash.

Cool Misery - Heavily influenced by Amebix and Antisect these guys are great. They exist from 1987 and they're still going. You can check their MySpace here -> http://www.myspace.com/miserycrust

9) Stuck On Ceiling - More of a Hardcore / Crossover band but still they deserve your attention mainly due to their great guitar work and awesome vocals.

10) Haine Brigade - Good Anarcho-Punk band that is highly influenced by Crass.

11) Falll Of Efrafa - They're basically a neo-Crust band that has taken a lot of influence from post-rock but I like them.

Take some links to Punk blogs, too. Here you go:
