Welcome to Sonic Nexus. Remember, this board is just a baby, and it needs you to help it grow!

This thread is to be used for requests regarding grunge. Please be as specific as possible; for example, don't ask like this:
Quote:
i need some good bands like soundgarden
Instead, ask like this.
Quote:
I'm looking for grunge bands with a metallic sound similar to Alice in Chains, with mid-range vocals and depressive lyrics.
Avoid lists. They're unhelpful and force the requester to use up more time than they would have if you had given a short descriptions. So, describe the bands to the best of your ability, and this thread will be more productive.
Ask away. _________________ Everything here is so cold

Hmmm... what's a good Pearl Jam album? I figure I should start listening to them. That song, Jeremy, was so wicked... _________________ I just want to eat your brains.

Ten is quite popular. I'm not much of a Pearl Jam fan, so that's the best I can do for you. _________________ Everything here is so cold

I heard this song from this grunge band (I forgot the name, damn it!) "I Nearly Lost You". According to the RJ, the band was one of the first grunge bands to be singed onto a major label, does anyone know which band made that song? I liked it _________________ My Facebook, My Youtube, My Last.FM, My Blog
Excuse my ignorance here, but since grunge was so short lived, I had always imagined that grunge had very few bands, most of which were the classic grunge bands people know. I know I'm wrong but meh, that's all I know. _________________ NU-MOD

Grunge as a mainstream music source was really short lived: 1991-1994
I would say this because all 3 main bands of the movement had their breakout album that in 1991 (Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden, Nevermind by Nirvana, and Ten by Pearl Jam). And it ended in 1994 because, grunge's main man offed himself, Soundgarden maxed out and then started to slide, and by this time Pearl Jam had started to fade as well (some would say by their own doing).
But in my honest opinion grunge lasted from about 1984 to 1994. However 1984-1989 was a melting pot era when bands frequently exchanged members and formed and broke up before they could ever register on the map. Between this time the 2 of those 3 "classic" bands formed in that era, Soundgarden in 1984 and Nirvana in 1987. Pearl Jam can also trace its roots to about 1985, Most notably in Green River, and Mother Love Bone. Mother Love Bone was probably the best all round band of that area, but they had a sound closer to Motley Crue. Also forming around this time was Alice'n'Chains, which also at that time had more in common with Motley Crue, than what they became famous for.
But there were a lot of bands of that weird era of grunge like Green River, Mother Love Bone, Malfunkshun, Skin Yard, U-Men and many others I can't think of at the moment. But all of these bands broke up and either faded or had their members move onto other bands that we know today: Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Melvins, etc.
For example, Pearl Jam has members of Mother Love Bone who were formerly in Malfunkshun or Green River. They evolved, to be really blunt. Some bands broke up to form other bands. Green River basically became to bands in the end: Mudhoney and Pearl Jam.
But in the end the reason that we only know of the classic grunge bands, is because they evolved from bands early on and got rid of those who couldn't make good music, and therefore when they finally got noticed, the music was at its best.
Its all a mess that I really don't know how to properly explain over the internet.
Btw, I guess I don't mention Alice in Chains as one of the big 3 classic grunge bands because while they made some amazing music, they just plain weren't as popular as Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam.
OK, but they sounded like Nirvana's Bleach (according to my ears).
And you would be right. It sounds fairly similar to me too... But its all about where they came from to really be considered part of the "scene" or not.
