They say it's all about the music.  But is it really?

If so, why did so many people shit themselves over Metallica cutting their hair?

And what's stopping Amy Lee or Sharon Den Adel from wearing just any old jeans and t-shirt when Evanescence or Within Temptation do a show?

Or, is it all just a part of music being "entertainment" and "a show"?

Do people in music that wear the clothes they'd wear to an office job or a Saturday afternoon baseball game miss the point?

What do you think?

I'd love to say no, but I really think metal, and most other genres of music, are very into their style and image, even if it isn't the centralized, most important aspect of the genre.

Personally, I don't look like a metalhead at all. I look more like a kinkeh librarian than a metalhead. lol.

As long as the music is good. I don't care how they look.

Image is more important during live performances, as everyone can see as well as hear you.  When you're in front of a stadium full of people (in some cases), would you rather be seen in everyday clothes people could see anywhere, or in bold leather?  This is a major part of Priest and old RHCP concerts, for example.  Certain genres, like shock rock, are in it for the image, but it isn't terribly important in the studio.

I myself may be a metalhead, but I just look like your average teenage guy with glasses even though I may be wearing a Mercyful Fate shirt.  How you look does not define anything about you, except maybe your personal hygiene.

Heheh... I used to be a real grungey-looking kid... everyone would always assume I have bad hygiene, but I've always been a freak for good hygiene. If yar breath smells bad, I won't be near ya! Razz

But yea, image is central to some genres such as shock rock. Where would Marilyn Manson, for example, be without his trademark sharky look?

An image doesn't ruin a band for me, but it CAN lift the all-around experience (like live shows) to a bigger level if they have a really good one.

I donīt know how most of my favourite bands and artists look.

On another note, as an actress I know the importance of a good costume. Itīs a two- way thing; it prepares the actor/ artist as well as helps create a special energy and atmosphere with the audience. Live, clothes are important. Off- stage, not so. But then again, on stage nothing is ever really real.

Immortal for example, it just would not seem right if Abbath did not look like an action figure. It just enhances the experence.

I do look like I'm a fan of Metal. Long hair, ripped jeans, chain wallet, Metal shirt every day ect.

The same not very good musician he's always been.

Anyway, one of my favorite musicians is a guy by the name of John Mitchell.  He plays for Arena, Frost*, Kino, It Bites, and The Urbane

Aside from occasionally a black blazer, the guy doesn't do any big work with his image.  But nobody even thinks about it, because he's just super talented.

Yea well Djm, you have to understand that his image is a big part of his selling point.
