Upcoming Dedication of the New and Decidedly Confederate Kentucky Monument at Vicksburg.
Comdr. McCluney was contacted by the Commander of the Kentucky Division who told Larry that today was the day that a new and emphatically Confederate Kentucky monument was to be dedicated. This monument is the second Kentucky monument to be erected at the park, but this one has a Confederate Battleflag on it! The first one, erected in 2001, features Jefferson Davis AND Abraham Lincoln! It turns out that the Vicksburg National Military Park canceled today's dedication because the dedication was a rush job. The event/dedication will be rescheduled for Spring 2008. The Kentucky Division has asked for our support for the dedication of the new monument, which we will, of course, give. Larry said that the older Kentucky Monument supposedly features Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis shaking hands, which Larry denied Jefferson Davis would ever have done. [See nps.gov/vick/historyculture/kentucky-memorial.htm for an actual photo of the older monument in question. Davis and Lincoln aren’t shaking hands at the monument; they’re just standing facing each other.] Larry said that the only time that Davis and Lincoln ever actually met was when Davis was Lincoln’s superior (which this secretary assumes would have been during Jefferson Davis’ days with the Army during the Black Hawk War in the upper Mid-West).
Larry reported that the Kentucky Division paid for the new monument, which will feature a Confederate Battleflag. Vicksburg National Military Park has accepted the monument, in spite of the Battleflag engraved on it. The foundation has been laid out. The monument is ready to be installed.
Larry will keep us posted as to when the monument will be completed and when the dedication will take place. The Kentucky Division has asked us to supply as many re-enactors as possible for the event. The re-enactors will march in procession with the Kentucky Division for the dedication. There will be the firing of a salute at the dedication. This will be a two-hour dedication service, followed by a social. Larry said, “This will be a Confederate Kentucky monument dedication.”
Bill said for everyone to be watching the Jeff Davis Update [email updates] for info about the Kentucky Monument dedication _________________
