The Pledge of Allegiance at Beauvoir?
From: Bernhard1848@att.net
Chuck,
I noticed in the latest SHNV that the upcoming Beauvoir observance of Jefferson Davis's 200th Birthday itinerary includes a pledge of allegiance to the United States flag. Although Davis in his antebellum days fought under that flag, served Mississippi in Congress and was Secretary of War under Pierce, he never pledged any allegiance to it, but swore to protect the United States (and later Confederate States) Constitution from enemies both foreign and domestic. We recall that he would never pursue postwar amnesty as his actions were those of a patriotic American, and had fulfilled his duty to protect the Constitution---in that case from domestic enemies. The last Stars & Stripes he served under would be the 33-star version, and that might accompany the Third National at the ceremony.
With this in mind I would see it as quite inappropriate for the ceremony to include a pledge to a flag, and something Davis would never do, but it would certainly be proper for all to pledge fidelity to the Founders Constitution as Davis most certainly did. This would truly honor him on his 200th birthday.
However, if his spirit were to be present at Beauvoir that day, one could imagine the tears in his eyes as he witnessed his people worshipping the regime of the conqueror, and not the document of the Founders he fought to uphold.
