Good afternoon Ms. Hale Young,

Thank you for taking time to visit our museum in Richmond, Virginia. We regret that you did not enjoy exhibit and its content. Our mission, to tell the whole story of the conflict that still shapes our nation, is one we are most proud of.

As this exhibit took nearly 10 years to develop -- from concept to creation -- a myriad of professionals were consulted before we opened our doors in October 2006. Our exhibit, In the Cause of Liberty, was developed by a national team of more than a dozen prominent historians who provided the scholarship that supports the thesis presented in the exhibit: it is, for the first time, an accurate presentation of facts.

We did not tour the whole museum. I was so put out and disgusted by the time we viewed the first video, we left. Again, your basic theme was that slavery was "the cause" of the War Between the States.

I have studied "The War Between the States" for about twenty-five years. Yes, I am a fourteenth generation Southerner and my ancestors were Confederate. By the way, they owned no slaves! The large majority of Southerners owned no slaves. If anyone thinks these men risk their lives, their families and their all so the rich could keep their possessions, they best think again..

You state that your museum tells the "whole" truth of the conflict. I think not!

Does the center mention these facts!

1. The Corwin Amendment

2. Lincoln's answer to Horace Greeley, 19 August 1862, "As to the policy I "seem to be pursing as you say", I have not meant to leave any one in doubt. I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the near the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all slaves, I would do it; and If I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would do that. What I do about slavery and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I don't really believe it would help to save the Union".

3. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued as a political ploy by Lincoln because he feared England or France would side with the Confederacy; in fact, it freed no slaves at all. The slaves in the states held by the Union were not freed, only the ones in the states held by the Confederacy. Lincoln was definitely not "The Great Emancipator"!

4. The atrocities committed by Union troops against the southern civilians, both black and white. "The Uncivil War" lists atrocities recorded in The Official War of the Rebellion. There are many more written accounts of Federal troops murdering innocent civilians. The last issue of the magazine "North and South" features an factual article by Michael Bradley documenting the fact that over 1,000 civilians in Middle Tennessee were murdered by order of Union officers.

5. When Sherman made his infamous "March to the Sea", hundreds of blacks were following his army. He had the bridge burned at Ebenezer Creek after his troops had crossed to keep them from following them. Many drowned and many burned as a result of his action.

6. The black troops who fought for the North, many were contraband, were placed in a single unit with white officers. The black men who fought for the South fought side by side with their white counterparts.

I could list numerous facts to prove your museum does not tell the whole truth.
