VOTE on the appearance and content of "The Southern Cause"
This vote is open to guests as well as old and new members and I will use this information to bolster established members and enlist new ones. If you like it say so if not say that too, just be honest.

I guess someone has to be the "troublemaker", so I voted "No". I really dislike all of the flashy graphics, pop-up ads, and so forth. They distract from the content. I much prefer a very clean appearance.
I understand that this forum is set up so that the ads are used to pay for the upkeep of the site, and that's fine - web space is not free. The question was about the appearance though, so that's how I answered it.

You are correct sir, this is a non-pay site so the commercials are here and i can't do anything about that unless I pay out of my own pocket to keep the site up and in turn charge members. Vicious circle. And the graphics and the ads "I" placed are part of the cause and my contribution as a widely viewed site, to getting the word out for the smaller less viewed sites, forums & services all which support the "Cause" or the South in general. BTW I had a thread a while back telling members how they could avoid seeing the pop up ads by going into your profile. I have it set in mine and I see NO pop up ads.

JR is right.
The ads he has ZERO control over.
Those of us that have been using this host over the past couple of years have seen them try out
several different ad formats.
The current ads are still agrivating but MUCH less intrusive than the past versions we've seen come down the pike.
Those ads give the host funds to offset costs of running the service.
The ONLY options are
1> Move to another host which is a ROYAL pain in the A$$
for staff and members alike.
And you'll STILL be dealing
with ads
We've been here so long now
and the site is easily found
to just up and move would
cause more headache than it is worth.
2> Pay for ad free service
which in itself poses it's own issues.
Reb like me feels this site should remain free to ALL comers.
The over all fee for ad free is NOT that high
but it is nothing that has seriously been looked into.

I understand completely. I have 6 different web sites that I run, and there is no question that it costs money to maintain a site. I have set up free sites for others, so I understand how the system you are using works also.
My compliments to you - This is a fine web site given the limitations imposed by the system you are using. Please don't take my comments as criticism - it was intended only as a way to answer the question that was asked. We don't often get the chance to build a web community in a perfect world, and this is no exception.
My thanks for all the work you do to maintain The Southern Cause! I appreciate the privilege of being associated with this fine group.

Oh,
I'm quite sure your intentiion was not to critisize.
I just tried to post in such away that future readers might understand the reasons for some things here.
My own site was once on this same host.
We have since moved to our very own server but with JR's present situation that is just not an option for him at this point.
I hope 1 day we can get TSC set up on it's own server so that we have more control over what is and is not added.
The host just recently added a captcha image that must be entered upon logging in.
Their stand point is it will deter or prevent Spammers
and Spam_bots
but IMHO is nothing more than an aggrivation to legitimate members 
SIGH
the things 1 must put up with in dealing with a "free host"
