Shenandoah
- sweet valley far away

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Way hey, you rolling river.
Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Away, we're bound away 'cross the wide Missouri.
Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Way hey, you rolling river.
Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Away, we're bound away 'cross the wide Missouri.

Missouri she's a mighty river
Way hey, you rolling river.
When she rolls down, her topsails shiver
Away, we're bound away 'cross the wide Missouri.

Seven years, I courted Sally
Way hey, you rolling river.
Seven more, I longed to have her
Away, we're bound away 'cross the wide Missouri.

Farewell, my dear, I'm bound to leave you
Way hey, you rolling river.
Oh, Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you
Away, we're bound away 'cross the wide Missouri.

Jack Cade:

That's not the way I learned the song.

I got my lyrics off the Internet, but I don't remember where.

That version is a lot longer than the version you have, and by today's standards, would probably be considered politically incorrect, which makes me like it even more.

It begins,

"Missouri, she's a mighty river.
Away, you rolling river.
The Redskin's camp lies on its borders.
Away, I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
"

It then goes on to tell of a sailor's unrequited love for an Indian maiden, of the sailor being jilted by an English girl, and of the Indian maiden being duped into leaving with another seafarer.

As you might imagine, there are numerous verses to tell this lengthy story.

According to my source, "SHENANDOAH" was originally a traditional sea chanty, but modified for the use of sailors poling flatboats up the river (I think).

As I said, I don't remember which web site I got my version from, but I think it might have been an American or British Folk Song web site.

A couple of weeks ago, I drove over to the Shenandoah Valley, a place I'd never seen.

It is a gorgeous area, and I love it!

It's chock full of Confederate history.

Thank you.

To my knowledge it is in fact a shanty.
The ancient tribes believe Shenandoah is the birthplace of the world - I am inclined to agree.
