Trooper Blanton had served with the agency for 2 years and had previously served as a dispatcher for the Cherokee Tribal Police Department. He is survived by his wife and 2-week-old son.
CANTON, NC - According to the NC Highway Patrol, a Florida man has been charged in the shooting death of a Highway Patrol officer during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 on Tuesday in Western NC.
Law enforcement officers charged Edwardo Wong, II, age 37, of Ormond Beach, Florida with first degree murder in the death of Trooper David Blanton, Jr.

"an altercation occurred between Trooper Blanton and Wong and Blanton was fatally shot," said Lieutenant Everett Clendenin, Public Information Officer of the Highway Patrol. "Wong removed the trooper’s weapon and fled the scene."
According to police, Wong was later apprehended by local law enforcement officials and during a search of his vehicle, police said that they found narcotics and weapons in Wong’s vehicle.
Police say that Wong has a "lengthy" criminal record that includes convictions for felony assault on law enforcement officers, felony drug violations, felony possession of a firearm and others.
Wong is currently being held in the Haywood County Jail with out bail.
"Incidents like this remind us of what dangerous profession law enforcement is," said Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety Bryan E. Beatty in a statement to the media. "I ask all North Carolinians to say a prayer tonight on behalf of all our law enforcement families."
"The Patrol family has lost a member and the state of North Carolina has lost a dedicated public servant," said Colonel W. Fletcher Clay Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Subject: Prayer Request
Trooper Blanton was killed on June 17, 2008.
All of you are aware of the young state trooper that was killed in Haywood County Tuesday. Trooper Shawn Blanton left behind a wife and son. His son, Tye, was born 7 weeks premature and has been in serious condition since his birth May 31st. Tye was placed on life support yesterday afternoon and is now very critical.
The NC Highway Patrol is asking everyone they can possibly reach to please remember Shawn's son in your thoughts and prayers.
If you feel led to do so, please pass this prayer request along. For the service, dedication and commitment that Shawn displayed and these folks show us every day, this I can do. _________________
