NASCAR - Bristol, Tennessee

On Saturday morning, August 25, at approximately 4:00 AM, I would once again adorn the uniform of the Southern soldier and make my way to Johnson City, Tennessee. I would arrive around 5:30 AM on North Roan Street at the site of the famous Dixie Barbecue Restaurant, whereupon I would station myself along the side of the road with my beautiful Confederate Flag awaiting the arrival of Commander Jim Maddox of the Tennessee Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Commander Maddox would arrive around 6:30 AM, and we would make our way to Bristol, Tennessee, where on this day NASCAR would hold its' annual race at the Bristol Motor Speedway.

Unfortunately, unbeknownst to many or most of the hundreds of thousands of Southerners who would attend this event; Bill France Jr., and the executives of NASCAR had put into place a program to expand this event from a regional to a national and even international racing circuit. In order to accomplish their goal France and his management team had decided that to promote an atmosphere more attractive and comfortable to a diverse audience that they would absolutely forbid any heritage symbols; foremost of these symbols was the Confederate Battle Flag. In a television interview with 60 Minutes in October of this year, France had remarked, "it's not a flag that I look at with anything favorable, and further that the only flag that we get behind is the American flag". Using the same Reconstruction rhetoric aimed at dividing Southern Blacks and Southern Whites to further his carpetbag agenda to make more money , he reached back for the race card , and continued by saying that while this was formerly a Southern sport with a fan base mostly drawn from people who live below the Mason-Dixon line, NASCAR now appeals to people all over the country and has the television ratings to prove it, and furthermore appealing to minorities comes with the territory if a sport wants to become popular, and especially in places like Los Angeles , New York or even Mexico where he would be establishing a program for female and minority drivers.

Alongside Grayson Jennings of the National Sons Heritage Defense Committee and Lee Hart another infamous Son who had traveled with him from the Great State of Virginia, a host of Sons from the great State of Tennessee , and not to forget one of my baby girls Laurel who would spend the entire day in the 90 degree plus weather with us ; we began passing out to the many fans of NASCAR heading into the race, the now very famous thanks in part to the scalawags of the Southern Poverty Law Center ; the Confederate NASCAR Protest Flag. After signing hundreds of these flags and posing for as many photographs, my comrades and I would thank the Millhorn family that had provided us the space in their yard as a base in which to operate from, and bring to close what we believed to have been a very successful day; we had passed out over 1,000 flags and literature that told the story of the NASCAR disgrace.

I would be remiss in my duties if I did not mention the demeanor of the NASCAR drivers who pass by us. It was not just their refusal to accept one of our flags; it was their attitudes, especially those who wore the uniform of Dale Earnhardt Junior who had already disgraced himself as a Southerner with his negative comments about our beloved flag. I could not help but to think of Dick Poplar at this moment who had been on my mind all day, for I had been asked by one of my brothers to comment on a memorial to him. Dick, a Confederate soldier from the famous Sussex Dragoons that later became the Thirteenth Virginia Calvary had been captured at Gettysburg and sent to Fort Delaware and later moved to Point lookout where he would spend 14 months and be put under special pressure to desert the Southern Cause and take the oath of allegiance to the United States, but he treated his oppressors with cold contempt. He declared himself "a Jeff Davis man" and said he didn't care who heard him say so. He endured almost twenty months of life in one of the very worst prisoner of war camps of the war. Had Dick been one of those NASCAR drivers , when France set his policy in motion to ban our flag , Dick would have refused to turn on the ignition of his car , and would have joined me and my comrades alongside little Laurel in the heat of the day in protest; Dick was a Black Confederate Soldier.

Further Examining NASCAR's Declared War On Confederate Flag

NASCAR'S futile attempt to gain support from the Black community to bolster it's coffers by declaring war on the Confederate Flag should very well fall on deaf ears here in the South. Let us examine the cost for an admission ticket which is somewhere in the $90.00 per ticket range; if NASCAR thinks that the average Black can afford or will attempt to afford this pricey admission, then France better put his thinking cap back on. Maybe, and I stress maybe, he might find one or two Blacks that will brave the terror of driving 1-2 hundred miles per hour round and round a race track for hours on end; again something that most Black folks historically don't find attractive, and for sure, they don't relish sitting in front of a television screen watching NASCAR. Now maybe if NASCAR can get Stevie Wonder to fire up one of those engines and head down the track; then we might have something going on.

Now let us examine the vendors who sell at the NASCAR events: Black folks won't take it too well paying $30.00 for a rack of ribs, and $8.00 for a hamburger. Nor will you find the scalawag Dale Earnhardt's #8 jersey or replica of his car on the shelves of many, if any black homes.

NASCAR knew the honorable reputations of the many White men and their families who put the Southern Cross on their cars and posted it on the tracks. Instead of the treachery that they now invoke by playing the politically correct game; they should have repaid their debt to the Southland by joining with the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy, and organizations like the Confederate Rose, in teaching the many young Blacks and their new public the true history of the Southland and of the honor and dignity earned by the millions of Blacks who loyally served under the Christian Cross of St. Andrew. Instead they took to the low road of political correctness and climbed into the bed with the black mailing poverty pimps, carpetbaggers, historical revisionists, and those who continue to try to eradicate our Christian principles and love for our Southern symbols.

My mom use to tell her children that anything that we did was a reflection on ourselves, our family and most importantly our race. For these reasons, she always told us that we must strive to always do good. I have always tried to apply these principles to myself and others of my family and race. However, when several days ago the newspapers began to report that NASCAR had for the first time a Black race car owner , that sense of pride was somehow lost. It was even so much more distasteful when I learn that it was Brad Daugherty, a young Black man that has always swelled my heart with a sense of pride because of not only his achievements on and off the basketball court, but also in the community.

While Mr. Daugherty has stayed away from the controversy that surrounds the despicable behavior of NASCAR’s CEO Bill France Jr. and other scalawags like Dale Earnhart JR. toward the Southern Cross, and to my knowledge has never spoken an unkind word about those Southern folk who choose to fly this honorable symbol; I can feel no pride about his ground breaking entrance into the world of motor car racing. Furthermore, it is very painful for me to issue a statement like this about the efforts and accomplishments of a young man that I know, love, and have a great deal of respect for.

NASCAR’s vision of the high road by bringing MR. Daugherty , a young black man into the world of ownership of car racing is somewhat tainted because they chose to attack the symbol of the South with the same Reconstruction rhetoric designed to separate Southern Blacks and Southern Whites. They could have done themselves proud had they chose to rise above the lies of tainted history and political correctness by using men like Mr. Daugherty and myself as Ambassadors of good will to teach and uninformed public that those people who proudly display the Confederate flag in and around the tracks of NASCAR, only do so because of a sense of pride in their region of the country, the Southland of America, its honorable people, and after all , this is where NASCAR began in a place where Red, Yellow, Black and White folks earned a place of honor and dignity carrying this honorable banner for what they believed in: “their homeplace”.

Well the NAACP is at it again, they are planning to boycott the race in Homestead if Brian France and NASCAR don't openly ban the Confederate Flag from the track. France has already been dumb enough to speak out against our flag in the past and HAS banned it from display by the drivers, crews & cars which was bad enough, he and his ill advised advisers are really trying to continue to bite the hand that feeds them and it will come back and bite them!

And I think the NAACP should be more worried about black on black violence, gangs, deadbeat fathers, gangster rap music and real work place discrimination and not about a piece of cloth on a pole which is not hurting anyone. I goes to show they are all mouth and no guts or brains, instead of doing something to improve the quality of living for their people they are fighting over a flag. Ridiculous...
