With the Winter season almost upon us, it's time to start picking the team order. I guess [at Biggin Hill] we're blessed by the fact everyone wants to play No.1 (or 2 at least ). So as captain, what do we base it on?
Challenge matches? Well yes this is going on but how many times do you have to beat someone to take the rightful place? What if you beat them twice but they have beaten you the five times before that? What if they usually beat you, but you won the last contest by the skin of your teeth, would you deserve their place?
Competition is rife and that's a good thing, but so is getting the right team order don't you think? |

I think the tournament would be a good way of gauging how well people are playing, If you are playing lower in the team it is your perfect chance to shine! |

as we all know we have peaks and troughs during the season, surely the order should be decided by a play off the last tuesday before the beginning of the next session ,or the nearest day to that should one player not be available. On the other hand some teams would be happy just to have 5 players. I would say previous matches, whilst looking good on the cv, do not reflect current form. What do you recon |

I wouldn't know about Div 1., but for us in 2 it might pay to have positions judged by a weigh-in. Some of my players can go up or down by 20/30 lbs over the course of a season.
The other things we have to contend with are egos and people who want to avoid or meet certain opponents (like ML and Badger love to meet even though one of them can't accept that he really is a 1st string ). |

I'd have to agree with the 'form' statement from CBW. It is all about who is regularly beating the other as we approach the start of the season. The more recent the results, the better they stand up.
Jolly John, thank you for the little comment. And I've noticed you've been slipping these comments in about the order I play for a while now. Truth be known, yes I'd have loved to have played No.1 last season but Mr. McManus had earned his stripes so how could I have put myself above him. There have been some healthy challenge matches going on during the closed season and the order is not set (hence this post). I still haven't played Toby yet either!
And yes CBW, I've been trying to develop a drop - unsuccessfully!! |

If I erred, then 'mea culpa'. But did I not see ML vs TB result from a recent Limpsfield Tournaement?
And do I not recall ML being unbeaten last Winter at 2 & 3? If that happened in my team, without the culprit being promoted, eyebrows would be raised |

Sorry, TM! Damn these abbreviations.
Surely, like all good mentors, the older man steps aside to encourage the young upstarts - even if they are years from fulfilling their potential?
P.S. I did try the chat room, but there was nobody there. |

The limpsfield result was a good one on paper however we had both played a total of 4 very tough matches over one weekend. Not really fair to include that. The challenge needs to be when both are fresh and know what is at stake.
Re last season, yes it was a good season however, Gordon McManus also had a good season - at No.1. He earned 18 points; that amounts to 18 individual games won aginst other strong No.1's in the league. That's pretty good going.
You do seem to be very on the ball, are you related to our other website member? |

Yes, I agree you should give tired, stale and old people another chance.
Some of my best friends and relatives are former 'guests' on your show. Sadly, no longer welcome.
btw, congrats on County Hot Shot ML - lucky you are not posting under 'guest' or alias any more, so you can build up the cred.
I presume Chat Room posts don't count for honours. |

I hope Stells finds a club soon. I wouldn't want to see her involved in a cat fight for a place in a team. |
