THE CANTERBURY SQUASH OPEN 12th-15th APRIL 2007

This was the 4th year that the tournament has run and it was another successful weekend. 45 players signed on to play for the first prize of £350.

With so many players competing, the tournament had to begin a day earlier than scheduled to fit all the matches in.

Semi Finals – Sunday 15th April
Mark and Dave both worked so hard to win their quarter finals I’m not sure how much they had left on the Sunday. The scores show that they both competed in the first games but then I think tiredness took its toll. Mark and Dave won £80 each for reaching the semi finals.
T.Phipps beat M.Steeden 3-0 15-9 15-5 15-4
J.Brewer beat D.Beattie 3-0 15-11 15-5 15-5
Final
This was the 2nd year in a row that John had made it to the final and after losing to Ben Ford 3-2 in 2006 I’m sure he was hoping to go one step better this year. The first two games were closely fought but Tom pulled away in the 3rd and 4th to take the title and the 1st prize of £350. John had to settle for the 2nd prize of £200.
T.Phipps beat J.Brewer 3-1 15-9 15-17 15-7 15-7
Plate 1st Round
Because there were three rounds of the Plate to get through on the Saturday the 1st round was 'best of 3' only.
A.Coleman beat S.Goddard 2-0 D.Lockyer beat G.Brundle 2-0 T.Morris beat D.Nixon 2-0 D.Newberry beat J.Faulkner 2-0 J.Rivers beat G.Cutting 2-1 B.Alderson beat M.Beattie 2-0 S.Dunk beat D.Cox 2-0 R.Coombs beat C.George 2-0
Plate 2nd Round

Plate Quarter Finals
D.Lockyer beat A.Saville 3-2 D.Newberry beat S.Eastman 3-1 M.Jeffery beat T.Montgomery 3-2 C.Wilkes beat B.Alderson 3-1
Plate Semi Finals
D.Newberry beat D.Lockyer 3-1 15-9 15-12 12-15 15-9
C.Wilkes beat M.Jeffery 3-2 10-15 12-15 15-6 15-12 15-8
Plate Final
Sadly the Plate final wasn’t a classic as Chris was clearly shattered from his five game marathon with Mark in the morning and his close call with the police the night before! Dean won £30 and Chris £15.
D.Newberry beat C.Wilkes 3-0 15-10 15-6 15-10
Special thanks must go to Brett for sponsoring the event, because without them there wouldn't be one.
Special thanks must also go to Ken Winstanley for giving up his time to mark.
It was a fantastic weekend of squash that was well supported. Hopefully next year will be even more successful. Thank you all.
