Bad news, good news...

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has placed RHP JAKE WESTBROOK on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, April 20th with a left intercostal strain. To replace Westbrook's spot on the Major League roster the Indians recalled OF BEN FRANCISCO from AAA Buffalo.

Westbrook has made 4 starts for the Indians so far this year as he is 1-2 with a 2.73 ERA (29.2IP, 28H, 10R/9ER, 5BB, 16K). His 2.73 ERA currently ranks 14th in the American League. Today marks the 5th DL stint of his Major League career.

Francisco started the year on the AAA Buffalo roster after being optioned at the conclusion of spring training (March 27). He was batting .208 (15-72) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, a triple and 3RBI in 18 games for the Bisons. Francisco appeared in 16 spring training games as he hit .362 (17-47) with 8 runs scored, 3 doubles, 3HR and 9RBI. He wears #12 and will be in uniform tonight when the Indians take on the Kansas City Royals at 8:10PM EST in Kauffman Stadium.

That really kinda sucks about Westbrook. He wasn't doing horrible and we could use him. It will be really nice to have Francisco up though. See if he can make it worth the move. Does this mean they're going with a four man rotation till Jake's back then?

He's baaaaaack!

from cleveland.com:

Outfielder Ben Francisco appears to be coming back to Cleveland.

After the second game of the Class AAA Buffalo Bisons' doubleheader Sunday, Francisco told Buffalo News reporter Mike Harrington that he would be recalled in time for the Indians' series in New York that begins Tuesday.

Francisco told Harrington that he had been informed by Buffalo manager Torey Lovullo of the promotion.

Francisco was called up to Cleveland on April 22 when Jake Westbrook was placed on the disabled list, then sent down April 26. Ten days needed to elapse before he could be called up again. A roster move will need to be announced before Tuesday's game to create space for Francisco's addition.

"Baseball's a crazy game, but things happen," Francisco told Harrington. "I guess those 10 days weren't the right time for me. Now my opportunity is here, and I have to make the most of it."

Francisco was scratched from the second game of the doubleheader. He is batting .228 with the Bisons.

Francisco made his major-league debut with the Indians last season, during which he batted .274 in 25 games for the Tribe. He batted .318 in 95 games for the Bisons, good enough for the International League batting crown.

On Indians.com it says they may "move" J-Mike to make room for him... I wonder if that means to the minors or trade/let him go!  I guess we'll find out soon...

Hmm...interesting.  My friend would be happy with that.  I don't mind him, but she has a big distaste for him.  It would be sad not to be able to joke about his hair anymore though.

Westbrook needs season-ending surgery on right elbow

Detroit _ Jake Westbrook is done for the season and facing reconstructive surgery on his right elbow.

Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer, was expected to go into details about Westbrook's surgery before gametime today at Comerica Park where the Indians play the Tigers in the second game of a four-game series. Westbrook was examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum, an expert in the care and repair of pitcher's elbow, Friday in Los Angeles.

The Indians placed him on the disabled list Tuesday with a sore right elbow. Westbrook suffered the injury in a May 28 start against Chicago.

The Indians were counting on Westbrook,30, being a key member of what they felt in spring training was one of the best starting rotations in the big leagues. The rotation is still formidable, but it won't be as effective without Westbrook.

Jeremy Sowers will take Westbrook's spot in the rotation.Fausto Carmona, another member of the opening-day rotation, is also on the disabled list, but is expected to pitch again this season. He strained his left hip on May 23 in a start against Texas.

Westbrook, who has been on the disabled list three times in the last two seasons, was 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA in five starts this year. He signed a $39.1 million contract extension last year through 2010.

I could cry....  Cry
