From cleveland.com:

Indians drop Michaels, Francisco to join team Tuesday in New York

Categories: Breaking News, Indians
Outfielder Jason Michaels has been designated for assignment today to make room for outfielder Ben Francisco, who will join the Indians Tuesday in New York for a three-game series against the Yankees.

The move does not become official until Tuesday because Francisco has not been at Class AAA Buffalo for 10 days since he was last optioned by the Indians.

"We think Ben can us a spark," said GM Mark Shapiro. "We think he could be more than a platoon player. He hits right and lefthanders. This will give Eric Wedge a chance to keep David Dellucci healthy and strong in left field. Ben can also spell Franklin Gutierrez in right field.

"This one move will not cure our offensive woes. Jason Michaels wasn't the pressing cause of our problems. When you have five to seven players struggling, you can't make one or two moves to solve those problems. The answer has to come from within."

Michaels cleared waivers today. He opened the season platooning in left field with Dellucci. After a great spring training, Michaels started slowly in the regular season. To make matters worse, just about every hitter on the club has been in a protracted slump.

The right-handed hitting Michaels, signed through this season, is hitting .207 (12-for-5Cool with nine RBI. The Indians acquired Michaels for left-hander Arthur Rhodes on Jan. 27, 2006.

I have mixed feelings about this...I like J-Mike I think he's a good guy, he hasn't been the best but then again neither was Dellucci...but I love Ben Francisco, so I guess you win some and you lose some.

So I'm taking it that J-Mike is actually off the team, not just put down to the minors, right?  It's kinda sad to see him go, but as you said, Francisco may be able to at least help out.

He was designated for assignment.  That means they have 10 days to trade him, just outright release him or send him to the minors... but he'd have to clear waivers to get to the minors.  I believe... correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for clearing that up.  I guess we have to wait 10 days to see what's going to happen.

No I think that's right Michele....
Bruce Drennan said he might have released Andy Marte instead...I would have done that!

Hopefully if Barfield can get his bat straight, Marte won't be far behind Michaels...

I think we should DH Marte and get rid of Pronk, honestly. Don't ever put Marte in as defense ever again..

1st- Garko/Martinez/Blake
2nd- Carroll/Cabrera
Short- Cabrera/Peralta
3rd- Blake
Right- Gutierrez/Blake
Center- Sizemore/Gutierrez
Left- Dellucci/Carroll
DH- Marte/Garko/Martinez

Confused

We need to get rid of Hafner.  I have a bad feeling he was taking something he should have been that year he played so well... just my own opinion.  Still, he's lost it.  At spring training I noticed he was swinging at balls 6 inches off the ground -- consistently!  I mean everyone's gonna chase a bad pitch once and a while, but he's doing it all the time.  I hope that he can turn it around, but I just don't see it happening.  The only thing he's done more of this year is hit opposite field, which is good... he's just not hitting often enough.  When I see him come up I cringe.  I miss the old Pronk!

Yeah I agree with you Michele, I love Pronk and all, but he's not helping the team at all...

I didn't like that Shapiro painted himself into a corner with the Michaels/Dellucci platoon. You can't make a good outfielder out of two mediocre ones. I thought it should have been Francisco, Gutierrez, and Michaels as the corner outfielders. The thing that gets me is why Wedge plays Marte so sparingly. Blake's been struggling big time and I always root for him, being that it's my surname also. They made a semi big deal about not wanting to let Marte go and have another Brandon Phillips situation. So why not play him more? They'll not see how he can be as a regular player unless he plays regularly.

I think we need to just suck it up and get rid of Marte.  I hate that guy.  I'd rather have Barfield up here... at least he can bunt and has speed for pinch-running situations.  I mean what does Marte really have that should make us keep him?  His bat?  He's hitting under .100... I know he doesn't have a lot of opportunities, but he's not doing anything when he does have a chance to prove that he should be out there.  And his defense makes me want to punch a hole in my wall.

I agree!  But sadly...I think that they would send Asdrubal down before they let Marte go, that and a few people on STO have been saying that....I don't know why they're so afraid of letting Marte go, but I'd do it in a heartbeat...

I don't know why they're so in love with him.  Asdrubal does need a kick in the pants, it may be wise to send him down for a bit... but that doesn't mean Marte should stick around either.
