So there's two rumors going around with the Cavaliers this off-season and they're about us acquiring Jermaine O'Neal and/or Michael Redd. There's both positives and negatives with both of them, but I found an article from yesterday so I figured I'd share it with all of you to see how you feel about it.
So how would you feel about Jermaine O'Neal?
All together now: The Cavs need a wing player that can make shots.
But what if I told you the Cavaliers could have a shot at an All-Star caliber forward? Check out this little blurb from DraftExpress.com:
"The Indiana Pacers are trying to dangle the #11 pick in hopes of being able to package it with one of their ugly contracts (preferably Jermaine O'Neal). There is talk out of O'Neal's camp that he anticipates being trade to Cleveland at some point this summer, possibly in a deal involving expiring contracts such as Wally Szczerbiak and Eric Snow.
The Pacers don't want to give O'Neal away for nothing, but the temptation of shedding his 23 million dollar contract from their cap figure (giving them substantial cap space to work with in July of 2009) may be too great to pass up."
I wrote this back in March when I was assessing some of the Cavaliers options this offseason:
"[The Pacers are] another going nowhere fast team, [and] Jermaine O'Neal is set to make $21.3 million in '08-'09 and $22.9 million in '09-'10. He's 30 years old and his numbers are in a disturbing decline lately, though, so the Cavs would have to think twice before dealing for him."
On top of that, this blog has had numerous comments bringing up Jermaine O'Neal. The Cavaliers Forum brings up Jermaine O'Neal. In other words, if this rumor is true, there's at least discussion amongst fans about having interest in bringing in the Pacers forward.
Here are the questions the Cavaliers would have to ask before dealing for O'Neal:
1. Is he healthy? He's averaged 51 games the last four seasons. The last time he played more than 70 games was in '03-'04. He might be healthy again, but he also just turned 30. And it's not a young 30. He's been in the league 12 years. He's battled against NBA post players for 12 years. This isn't the NFL where 30 is automatically a red flag, but considering the trend of games played and the decline in production the last two years, the Cavaliers better be dead sure this recent trend won't continue.
2. Will they have enough shooting? O'Neal can hit the midrange shot, but the Cavaliers will still need players that can hit threes. Daniel Gibson can. Delonte West can. Damon Jones can but he will probably either be traded or won't play. Wally Szczerbiak would be gone in this deal, and he didn't hit shots in a Cavs uniform anyway. The Cavaliers could definitely benefit from having a scorer at the four, but they'll still need shooters, either from their current roster or in a subsequent move. With or without O'Neal, if defenses don't have to respect the three-ball, they can continue to focus their defense below the free throw line.
If the Cavaliers answer those two questions and feel good about acquiring O'Neal, then let the negotiations begin. _________________

That would make me happy... either player. But I just don't have to have to give up too much for them. _________________ ~*Michele*~ |

Another name being thrown around is Mike Miller from the Grizzlies...I like all three for our team, but I guess the real man focus is on trying to get Redd for our team. I don't want to have to go after Miller though because last year around the trade deadline we were working out a deal with the Grizzlies and they kept dangling Miller in front of Danny Ferry and kept pulling him back and saying oh well that's not what we want, we want more for him and stuff like that and then we went with the Wallace deal with Chicago.
The only good thing is we do have a bit more to offer people now...like a lot of people are saying that they see Wally being traded to get us something good, of course with some other stuff, but he probably won't be here next year because he's not the same player he was when we thought we were getting a good shooter. _________________
