i thought this was funny.
Cliff Lee is still racking up wins.
The AL’s reigning Cy Young Award winner was named the city’s top professional athlete on Wednesday night, beating out Cavaliers superstar LeBron James and golfer Ben Curtis, a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.
James had won the award three straight years before losing out to former Indians and current New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia — the 2007 Cy Young winner — last year.
“Shouldn’t this go to LeBron James?” Lee quipped as he was handed his glass trophy.
Lee went 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA last season, bouncing back from a dreadful ’07 when he got hurt in training camp, won just five games, was demoted to the minor leagues and left off the Indians’ postseason roster. He went to spring training last year trying to win the No. 5 starting spot in Cleveland’s rotation.
Lee has been hauling in hardware for months. He was in Kansas City recently to receive the Bullet Rogan Award as the AL’s top pitcher and was presented with an Arkansas baseball jersey at halftime of the school’s football game against LSU. He pitched for the Razorbacks before going pro.
He’ll receive his Cy Young plaque this weekend in New York at the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s annual dinner.
“When you win awards, you gotta go get ’em,” he said.
There’s something else Lee wouldn’t mind getting — a contract extension from the Indians. The left-hander will make $5.75 million next season and the Indians have a $9 million club option in 2010. The club hasn’t approached him about a new deal, but he would be open to talks.
“It’s something I’m open to,” he said. “I don’t see why not.”
The ninth annual awards show, hosted by CBS’ Jim Nantz, brought out the best Cleveland’s sports has to offer with the exception of James, who is on the West Coast with the Cavaliers.
The event was also the first public appearance of new Browns Head Coach Eric Mangini, who was fired after three seasons by the New York Jets.
“I’m calling it now,” Nantz said, staring into a camera near the stage at the Renaissance Hotel. “Within three years, Eric Mangini is taking the Cleveland Browns to the Super Bowl.”
Among the other celebrities on hand were Hall of Famer Bob Feller, Indians Manager Eric Wedge, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry and Olympic gold medal figure skaters Scott Hamilton and Carol Heiss Jenkins. _________________
