Twins add Pavano from Cleveland

Minnesota acquires veteran right-hander for stretch run
08/07/09 11:31 AM ET

The Twins acquired veteran right-hander Carl Pavano on Friday from the Indians in exchange for a player to be named later.

Pavano, 33, in the midst of a somewhat revitalizing season following four disappointing years with the Yankees, adds some veteran presence to the rotation of a Minnesota team that will open a weekend series against Detroit with a 53-55 record, in third place in the AL Central, trailing the division-leading Tigers by 4 1/2 games.

To accomodate Pavano on the 25-man Major League roster, the Twins optioned right-hander R.A. Dickey to Triple-A Rochester.

Pavano went 9-8 in Cleveland -- matching his victory total for 2005-08 in New York -- with a 5.37 ERA in 17 starts and 100 innings. He is expected to join the team tonight in Detroit.

Pavano last pitched on Sunday, making him available for manager Ron Gardenhire to immediately inject him into the rotation.

He is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA against the Tigers this season.

::CLAPS:: for Dolan of course! Nice job, bud. You deserve a cookie!

Kinda funny how Pavano was traded today when we just won the series against the Twins yesterday... Maybe thats they're payback to us!! Plus they know that Dolan is a sucker for crappy trades.

In first start with Twins, Pavano shines
Righty shuts down Tigers as offense behind him unloads

DETROIT -- The Twins didn't specifically go out and acquire Carl Pavano based on the success that he's had against the Tigers this season.

But with Minnesota facing first-place Detroit this weekend and the club looking for a boost to keep it from falling out of contention in the AL Central race, the hope was that Pavano could find a way to duplicate those results vs. Detroit in a Twins uniform.

Pavano certainly lived up to the task on Saturday night, holding the Tigers scoreless over seven innings in an 11-0 victory at Comerica Park that moved the third-place Twins to within 4 1/2 games of Detroit.

The veteran right-hander allowed five hits and struck out five in his debut for Minnesota. It brought Pavano's record this season to 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA in four starts vs. Detroit, the previous three which came while he was with the Indians.

The Twins' offense provided a warm welcome to their new starter as well, delivering a total of 14 hits en route to the lopsided win.

Facing Tigers starter Justin Verlander, Joe Mauer blasted his 19th home run of the season, a two-run opposite-field shot, in the first inning. Verlander (12-6) lasted six innings in his start, allowing five runs on seven hits as he picked up his first loss since July 18.

Denard Span tallied five hits on the night, matching his career high, which came on July 3 vs. Detroit. Orlando Cabrera extended his career-high hitting streak to 18 games with a two-run triple in the eighth inning.

Such a big shocker that he is beasting over in Minnesota. I mean he was good for us. What I don't get is why they traded him to a team in their division. DUMB move if you ask me... But what smart move have they made this season??
