TAMPA – Tampa Bay was able to have a solid backfield for one week, but once again, the Bucs are forced to deal with injuries to key players.

Bucs RB Michael Pittman reaggravated his previously sprained right ankle during practice this week and could possibly miss Sunday’s home game against Washington. In addition, fullback B.J. Askew did not practice on Thursday because of an ankle injury and his status is also up in the air.

Pittman originally severely sprained his ankle against Indianapolis on Oct.7 and missed four games before making his return last week at Atlanta. He dropped a pass and fumbled once, but rushed 10 times for 44 yards and caught two passes for 17 yards.

However, Pittman reinjured that ankle when he was on the bottom of a pile and Bucs coach Jon Gruden said his status is in question.

“I’m concerned. I haven’t had him very much for a while, so yeah, we’re always concerned,” Gruden said. “But we live in our hopes and not in our fears.”

One reason to be concerned is Pittman’s presence was needed to give starting RB Earnest Graham some rest. Graham had been carrying the load since Cadillac Williams was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury against Carolina, but Pittman helped to ease Graham’s workload.

If Pittman is unable to play, RB Michael Bennett will probably be activated this week and receive playing time.

Gruden said he did not believe Pittman rushed his recovery and preferred to simply categorize it as an injury incurred during practice.

“It’s unfortunate,” Gruden said. “We need him, bad. That injury hurts us.”

Meanwhile, if Askew is unable to play, FB Byron Storer could make his first career start. Gruden said he could use any of his tight ends at fullback if necessary, but hopes Askew is able to go.

“I really don’t want to speculate. I expect Askew to play,” Gruden said.

Not good news. Graham thus becomes the second-most important guy on the team behind Garcia.
Need to get those backs healthy so as to finish 10-6 or better.
