The Rays are close to trading Delmon Young and shortstop Brendan Harris and outfielder outfielder Jason Pridie to the Minnesota Twins for pitcher Matt Garza, shortstop Jason Bartlett and reliever Juan Rincon, sources familiar with the talks confirmed Wednesday. An official announcement of the trade could come later tonight.

New Twins general manager Bill Smith, in an appearance on the Twin Cities’ KSTP radio shortly after 8 p.m. tonight, was non-committal about a possible deal.

“There are a lot of talks going on, there are a lot of talks with a lot of clubs,” he said. “I don’t think it’s fair to get out there with specific names and whatnot, so I’m going to leave it at that.”

Asked if any deal might be forthcoming in the next 24-48 hours, this was Smith’s response:

“Is anything imminent? I can’t tell you. It can all change in a phone call, up or down.”

Harris said late this afternoon that he hadn’t heard anything official about the deal, but was getting numerous text messages and calls from friends wondering what was going on.

Young, 22, the overall No. 1 pick of the 2003 draft, hit .288 last season with 13 homers and 93 RBI. He finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting. Harris, 27, hit .286 with 12 homers and 59 RBI. Pridie was a second-round selection by the Rays in the 2002 draft. He hit .318 in 63 games for Triple-A Durham and .290 in 71 games for Double-A Montgomery and was just added to the 40-man roster last week.

Garza, a 24-year-old right-hander, was 5-7 with a 3.69 ERA in 15 starts for the Twins. In 83 innings, he had 67 strikeouts and 32 walks. Bartlett, 28, hit .265 in 510 at-bats. He had five home runs and 43 RBI. He had 23 stolen bases and is considered an above-average defensive shortstop.

Rincon, a 28-year-old right-hander, was 3-3 with a 5.13 ERA in 63 relief appearances. He struck out 49 and walked 28.
