Starting QB Jeff Garcia missed his first practice in a Tampa Bay uniform Wednesday and sounded very much like a player who could be sidelined Sunday when the Buccaneers (7-4) face the New Orleans Saints (5-6) in a critical NFC South Division game at the Superdome.

"The competitor in me might want to take a chance," Garcia, speaking to reporters while his teammates practiced, said of his playing status. "I might need help from someone else with not making that decision."

Garcia, the 37-year-old who is playing some of the best football of his career, suffered a deep lower back bruise in last weekend’s 19-13 defeat of the Washington Redskins. While he received treatment on the injury, Luke McCown apparently was getting the bulk of the snaps over incumbent No. 2 Bruce Gradkowski, who was ineffective against the Redskins, during Wednesday’s closed practice.

"All three of us are getting ready to play," McCown told the largest group of reporters in front of his locker during his three seasons in Tampa. "You just work as hard as you can to give your team the best to win. Nothing’s set in stone."

McCown, 26, last started a regular season game Dec. 26, 2004 as a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, losing 10-7 at Miami. He’s appeared in one game this season with the Bucs and five during his four seasons, completing 49-of-102 passes for 618 yards, four touchdowns, eight interceptions and a passer rating of 51.8.

But McCown had a nice training camp and played well during the exhibition games and earned the No. 2 spot to Garcia. The 6-foot-3, 212-pounder – who just might be the best all-around athlete on the team – went 36-of-50 (72 percent) for 394 yards, four touchdowns, one interception and a 113.3 rating during the four-game preseason. He also rushed eight times for 63 yards, including a 27-yard scramble.

He also has a much bigger arm than Gradkowski, who underthrew several receivers Sunday.

Dang, we are going to miss Garcia!! Sad

In my fantasy leagues, it makes it hard to decide on WRs, too...I have Galloway on several but will McCown or Grad be able to get him the ball???

GARCIA...GET WELL SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shooter
