LARGO – After seeing his life unravel over the last year, a Pinellas County man finally reached his breaking point, killing his ex-wife and her roommate. Though officials have not confirmed it, he may have also killed two children before taking his own life.
Investigators say Oliver Bernsdorff's violent rampage began in Largo. Police were called around 6:45 a.m. about a possible shooting at the Monterey Bay Apartments on Ulmerton Road, where they found two women dead inside one of the apartments.
Those two victims were Bernsdorff's ex-wife, Jennifer Davis, and her roommate, Andrea Pisanello.
The murder scene prompted police to check on Bernsdorff's home on Powderhorn Drive in Clearwater. There, they found the bodies of two young children.
About the same time, investigators spotted Bernsdorff's SUV parked near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The 36-year-old was inside, dead of an apparent suicide.
Detectives believe Bernsdorff killed the two women, though they will only say that the children's deaths are "connected" to the other murders.
Bernsdorff was a father of two children who was trying to cope with life as a single dad while working on a PhD. He and Jennifer filed for divorce in August, and it was finalized in October.
The filing revealed that the family was suffering significant debts, including over $100,000 in student loans, $50,000 owed to credit card companies, and even $27,000 in unpaid income taxes.
The divorce apparently hit Bernsdorff hard. His personal website was filled with photos of his wife and their smiling children from years past. But on his MySpace site, which was last updated on December 10, he talked about "trying to get the hang of one day at a time."
Bernsdorff worked as a GED teacher at St. Petersburg College and a part-time adjunct instructor at USF's St. Petersburg campus. _________________
