After losing out on Bill Parcells and Bill Cowher, the Falcons may have their next target.
The Falcons are interested in former San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Citing league sources, the paper said the Falcons are also inquiring about Chargers assistant GM Buddy Nix in a general-manager role.
The Chargers fired Schottenheimer after a 14-2 regular season a year ago, one that included a home loss to New England in the second round of the playoffs.
San Diego GM A.J. Smith talked to the Union-Tribune about the speculation, saying, "I have not heard about Buddy Nix, but I have heard the Coach Schottenheimer rumors.
"If true, I believe a Buddy Nix-Marty Schottenheimer team in Atlanta would be a perfect fit. ... Buddy got along well with Coach Schottenheimer. They socialized together, went out to dinner, golfed together, sat together on the plane, talked football all the time."
Atlanta is still looking for a permanent coach after former head coach Bobby Petrino left the team after 13 games to accept the head job with the University of Arkansas. _________________
