Rays sign LHP Kazmir
January 18, 2008
ST. PETERSBURG (TICKER) -- Scott Kazmir received an early birthday present.
The Tampa Bay Rays on Friday avoided salary arbitration with the lefthander by signing their staff ace to a one-year, $3.7 million contract extension.
Kazmir, who turns 24 on Thursday, went 13-9 with a 3.48 ERA last season and led the American League with 239 strikeouts.
Kazmir had a breakout season, setting club records in ERA, strikeouts and games started (34), as well as career highs in wins, starts, and innings pitched (206.2).
In addition, the 6-foot, 170-pound Kazmir became the youngest AL strikeout king since Angels' lefthander Frank Tanana achieved the feat in 1975 at the age of 22.
Acquired from the New York Mets in 2004 for Victor Zambrano, Kazmir has a career mark of 35-29 with a 3.64 ERA in 98 games with New York and Tampa Bay. _________________

Great signing for the Rays. They have a lot of very good, young talent and they seem to want to keep them around which is a great thing. The problem is the division they play in...they will never be able to complete with the high dollar Yankees and Red Sox. _________________
