SN's Final Power Poll: Giants come out on top
By Dennis Dillon - SportingNews
Coming out of Super Bowl 42, here's Sporting News' final power poll.
1. New York Giants (14-6). They dethroned the '68 Jets as the Super Bowl's upset kings.
2. New England Patriots (18-1). It isn't a perfect world after all.
3. San Diego Chargers (13-6). Could they have beaten the Patriots with a healthy L.T.? We'll never know.
4. Green Bay Packers (14-4). Will this be the year he retires? I'm talking about Aaron Rodgers.
5. Indianapolis Colts (13-4). With no first-round draft pick, look for them to make a big move in free agency.
6. Dallas Cowboys (13-4). That breath Wade Phillips feels on his neck is Jason Garrett's.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars (12-6). This team is close -- really close -- to being a Super Bowl contender.
8. Seattle Seahawks (11-7). The lack of a ground game was a grind on Mike Holmgren's nerves.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7). If Alan Faneca leaves, it will exacerbate their problems on the offensive line.
10. Cleveland Browns (10-6). If keeping Derek Anderson isn't high on their priority list, something is wrong.
11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-8). Is it just me, or did this team seem to tiptoe its way to a division title?
12. Washington Redskins (9-8). Note to Daniel Snyder: Most teams build their coaching staffs from top to bottom.
13. Tennessee Titans (10-7). We've said it before. They have to get Vince Young a stronger supporting cast.
14. Philadelphia Eagles (8-8). They should take that $769,000 T.O. owes them and use it as a down payment on a premier receiver.
15. Minnesota Vikings (8-8). Adrian Peterson looks like the real deal, but he can't carry the offense by himself.
16. Arizona Cardinals (8-8). Matt Leinart still must prove he's the answer at quarterback.
17. Houston Texans (8-8). They appear to be making progress, but it's at a snail-like pace.
18. Chicago Bears (7-9). They need to find a quarterback‹and he's probably not on their current roster.
19. New Orleans Saints (7-9). Fixing the defense will be a big-time restoration project.
20. Buffalo Bills (7-9). When they play games in Toronto, they'll still get four downs on offense, right?
21. Cincinnati Bengals (7-9). All together now: Dee-fense! Dee-fense! Are you listening, Marvin Lewis?
22. Denver Broncos (7-9). Here's another team that needs to focus on upgrading its defense.
23. Carolina Panthers (7-9). They need to find another wideout to keep opponents from suffocating Steve Smith.
24. Detroit Lions (7-9). The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" should be the anthem for their fans.
25. San Francisco 49ers (5-11_. Mike Martz's arrival could be the best thing that has ever happened to Alex Smith.
26. Baltimore Ravens (5-11). It can't be this difficult to find a competent quarterback. Or can it?
27. Oakland Raiders (4-12). Maybe Al Davis should draft a letter of retirement and mail it to himself.
28. New York Jets (4-12). They need to change their defense -- or get some players that fit it.
29. Atlanta Falcons (4-12). Roll up your sleeves, Mike Smith. You've got a lot of work ahead of you.
30. Kansas City Chiefs (4-12). I could be wrong, but I don't think Brodie Croyle is the quarterback to lead this team.
31. St. Louis Rams (3-13). The uncertainty of the ownership situation adds another layer to their pile of problems.
32. Miami Dolphins (1-15). Will Tuna Helper be enough to satiate the Dolfans' appetite for victory? _________________
